We investigated the gastric emptying of a small solid meal in 21 healthy middle-aged men. Nine heavy smokers and 12 non-smokers were studied with a scintigraphic technique, using 99Tc-tin colloid as a tracer. All subjects had been instructed to abstain from smoking for at least 10 h before and during the examination. Smokers had on an average a shorter

The physiology of gastric emptying
Best Practice & Research Clinical Anaesthesiology, 2006The gastric emptying rate is a carefully regulated process consisting of different mathematically defined phases. The gastric metabolic load, as well as neural regulatory mechanisms and hormonal influences, cooperate in order to achieve a well-balanced emptying of contents from the stomach into the duodenum for absorption in the small intestine.

The Association of Age with Gastric Emptying [PDF]
Gastric emptying is important as a rate-limiting step in the absorption of orally administered drugs. Paracetamol absorption kinetics were used to compare gastric emptying in 19 fit elderly and 19 fit young volunteers. The results showed no significant difference in any of the derived parameters (t1/2abs, tlag and tmax) between the two groups.

Gastric Emptying in Children with Gastric Transposition
Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, 1994SummaryUsing the noninvasive technique of electrical impedance tomography (EIT), gastric emptying was studied in 12 children, aged 9 months to 17 years, who had undergone gastric transposition (six with pyloroplasty) for oesophageal replacement (seven oesophageal atresia, five severe caustic or peptic damage). In two patients, gastric antral electrical

Inhibition of Gastric Emptying
2005In studies aimed at defining the role of amylin in glucose control, elevations of postprandial glucose concentration were blunted in subjects infused with the human amylin analog, pramlintide (Kolterman et al., 1995, 1996). An effect similar to blunt glucose excursions was observed by Brown and others during infusions of amylin in dogs trained to drink

Influence of Mastication on Gastric Emptying
Journal of Dental Research, 2002The role of mastication on digestion efficiency remains to be demonstrated. This study investigates whether masticatory function influences gastric emptying rate. Twelve normal volunteers were studied on two occasions after ingestion of the same test meal containing ham cubes, crackers, and egg (mixed with 13C-octanoic acid), chewed, in random order ...

Gastric Emptying of Liquids in Children
Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, 2016ABSTRACTObjectives:The present study was performed to determine normal values for gastric half‐emptying time (t1/2GE) of liquids in healthy children. Methods:Gastric emptying (GE) of a standardized test milk‐drink measured with 99mtechnetium scintigraphy and the 13C‐acetate breath test (13C‐ABT) was compared in 19 children ages between 4 and 15 years ...

The control of gastric emptying
Journal of the Autonomic Nervous System, 1983The control of gastric emptying has been restudied. Methods used are described. It was found that in the alert unanesthetized monkey saline is emptied from the stomach at a rate that is volume-dependent; an exponential curve results since higher volumes provoke more rapid emptying and lower volumes slower emptying.

Measurement of gastric emptying rate
Journal of Biomedical Engineering, 1987Gastric emptying rate was measured chronically using an electromagnetic probe inserted into the proximal duodenum via a duodenal cannula. Each duodenal gush was identified and its value calculated on the basis of pre-established threshold and timing criteria which eliminate shifts in the baseline and artefacts due to the presence of particles.
