Temperature, but not acidification, influences the growth and lipid profile of juvenile sand whiting, Sillago ciliata (Cuvier 1829)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Seafood provides an essential source of macro‐ and micronutrients for coastal communities worldwide. Climate change is a key threat to seafood security, altering the sizes, abundances, distributions, physiology and ecological interactions of fisheries species, and increasingly, there is evidence of impacts to seafood nutritional quality.

Evaluation of Alternative Sources of Proteins and Other Nutrients with Potential Applications in Fish Nutrition

open access: yesMolecules
The European Union’s (EU) agricultural self-sufficiency is challenged by its reliance on imported plant proteins, particularly soy from the Americas, contributing to deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions.

The jaws in the jaws: Morphofunctional analysis of the pharyngeal plates of Labrus viridis Linnaeus, 1758 (Teleostei, Labridae)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Functional morphology highlights the adaptive flexibility of fish feeding strategies across environmental gradients and seasonal variations, providing key insights for the management and conservation of ichthyofaunal communities and their habitats.

Bayesian and maximum likelihood consensus tree for gastropod phylogeny.

open access: yes, 2015
All deep nodes for Bayesian and maximum likelihood analyses were identical, and are illustrated here as a consensus tree showing the relationship among the major gastropod groups.

A bristle‐nosed Jurassic ray‐finned fish (Actinopterygii) bears true dermal odontodes on its snout

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
Teeth show extreme diversity, including tooth‐like dermal odontodes or “skin teeth” in many extant fishes. We describe the anatomy of enlarged tubercles on the snout of Redfieldius, an extinct early Jurassic fish. We found that the tubercles in Redfieldius are dermal odontodes that evolved independently from those of living species. Abstract Comparison

Demography of deep-dwelling red coral (Corallium rubrum) populations

open access: yes, 2013
Mediterranean red coral (Corallium rubrum, L 1758, Octocorallia, Gorgonacea) is a colonial anthozoan endemic to the Mediterranean Sea. Due to the high economic value of its carbonate axial skeleton this species has been harvested and traded for more than

Assessing Open-System Behavior of 14C in Terrestrial Gastropod Shells

open access: yes, 2011
In order to assess open-system behavior of radiocarbon in fossil gastropod shells, we measured the 14C activity on 10 aliquots of shell material recovered from Illinoian (~190-130 ka) and pre-Illinoian (~800 ka) loess and lacustrine deposits in the ...

Understanding marine biodiversity patterns and drivers: The fall of Icarus

open access: yesMarine Ecology, EarlyView.
Abstract Biodiversity patterns are fundamental in our understanding of the distribution of life, ecosystem function, and conservation. In this concept analysis, A survey of the existing knowledge on marine biodiversity patterns and drivers across latitudes, longitudes, and depths indicates that none of the postulated patterns represent a rule.
