Gauging the Gauge and Anomaly Resolution

open access: yes, 2022
In this paper, we explore the algebraic and geometric structures that arise from a procedure we dub "gauging the gauge", which involves the promotion of a certain global, coordinate independent symmetry to a local one. By gauging the global 1-form shift symmetry in a gauge theory, we demonstrate that the structure of a Lie algebra crossed-module and ...

Anomaly Cancellation with an Extra Gauge Boson [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2020
Many extensions of the Standard Model include an extra gauge boson, whose couplings to fermions are constrained by the requirement that anomalies cancel. We find a general solution to the resulting diophantine equations in the plausible case where the chiral fermion content is that of the Standard Model plus 3 right-handed neutrinos.

Axial Anomaly in Lattice Abelian Gauge Theory in Arbitrary Dimensions [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
Axial anomaly of lattice abelian gauge theory in hyper-cubic regular lattice in arbitrary even dimensions is investigated by applying the method of exterior differential calculus.

On the trace anomaly of a Weyl fermion in a gauge background

open access: yesEuropean Physical Journal C: Particles and Fields, 2019
We study the trace anomaly of a Weyl fermion in an abelian gauge background. Although the presence of the chiral anomaly implies a breakdown of gauge invariance, we find that the trace anomaly can be cast in a gauge invariant form. In particular, we find

Discrete gauge symmetry anomalies

open access: yesPhysics Letters B, 1991
Abstract It has been recently argued that quantum gravity effects strongly violate all non-gauge symmetries. This would suggest that all low energy discrete symmetries should be gauge symmetries, either continuous or discrete. Acceptable continuous gauge symmetries are constrained by the condition they should be anomaly free.

Some comments on 6D global gauge anomalies [PDF]

open access: yesProgress of Theoretical and Experimental Physics, 2021
Abstract Global gauge anomalies in six dimensions associated with non-trivial homotopy groups $\pi_6(G)$ for $G=SU(2)$, $SU(3)$, and $G_2$ have been computed and utilized in the past. From the modern bordism point of view of anomalies, however, they come from the bordism groups $\Omega^\text{spin}_7(BG)$, which are in fact trivial and ...

More about discrete gauge anomalies [PDF]

open access: yesNuclear Physics B, 1993
I discuss and extend several results concerning the cancellation of discrete gauge anomalies. I show how heavy fermions do not decouple in the presence of discrete gauge anomalies. As a consequence, in general, cancellation of discrete gauge anomalies cannot be described merely in terms of low energy operators involving only the light fermions.
