Dynamics of a split torque helicopter transmission [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
A high reduction ratio split torque gear train has been proposed as an alternative to a planetary configuration for the final stage of a helicopter transmission. A split torque design allows a high ratio of power-to-weight for the transmission.

Torque‐Transmitting Architected Metamaterials for Flexible and Extendable Tubular Robotics

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Soft and continuum robots commonly rely on fluid, tendon, or rod‐based power transmissions, to control robotic form and actuation. This study presents an architected structure, based on patterned straight‐line mechanisms, that enables simultaneous bending, extending, and torsionally rigid (BETR) transmission.

Surface pitting fatigue life of noninvolute, low-contact-ratio gears [PDF]

open access: yes
Spur gear endurance tests were conducted to investigate the surface pitting fatigue life of noninvolute gears with low numbers of teeth and low contact ratios for use in advanced applications.

Screw‐Based Pill for Intelligent Robotic Extraction of Viscous Fluids in Medical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Screw‐based pill for intelligent robotic extraction (S‐PIRE) is a magnetically actuated smart capsule with a motorized screw, 3‐axis sensor, and Bluetooth control for site‐specific and minimally invasive remote sampling of viscous fluids, overcoming passive diffusion limitations.

Dynamic Capacity and Surface Fatigue Life for Spur and Helical Gears [PDF]

open access: yes
A mathematical model for surface fatigue life of gear, pinion, or entire meshing gear train is given. The theory is based on a previous statistical approach for rolling-element bearings. Equations are presented which give the dynamic capacity of the gear

Crater Observing Bioinspired Rolling Articulator (COBRA)

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Crater Observing Bio‐inspired Rolling Articulator (COBRA) is a modular, snake‐inspired robot that addresses the mobility challenges of extraterrestrial exploration sites such as Shackleton Crater. Incorporating snake‐like gaits and tumbling locomotion, COBRA navigates both uneven surfaces and steep crater walls.

Dynamics of early planetary gear trains [PDF]

open access: yes
A method to analyze the static and dynamic loads in a planetary gear train was developed. A variable-variable mesh stiffness (VVMS) model was used to simulate the external and internal spur gear mesh behavior, and an equivalent conventional gear train ...

A Robotic Urinary Bladder Enabling Volume Monitoring and Assisted Micturition

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
An implantable robotic bladder is presented that can store urine in an origami‐designed enclosure. An inductance sensing principle can monitor and transfer the urine volume in real‐time. It can actively expand based on the amount of urine collected from kidneys and apply on‐demand mechanical compression to assist urination.
