Impact-Based Modeling of Backlash in Gear Driven Systems
ASME 2011 Dynamic Systems and Control Conference and Bath/ASME Symposium on Fluid Power and Motion Control, Volume 1, 2011Backlash in gears creates nonlinear dynamics in mechanical systems and has been analyzed using a variety of methods and models. In this paper, we present a nonlinear, piecewise model for backlash dynamics that incorporates a coefficient of restitution to account for impact behavior during limit cycling.

Compensation of backlash for teleoperated geared motor drive systems
IECON 2013 - 39th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, 2013Robotics is a major field that is being researched for decades. With the use of robotic technology, applications of the microscopic level to the places where the human cannot reach are facilitated. When it comes to the larger robots, large actuators and drives have to be used to obtain the desired amount of power and the force or torque needed.

A New Backlash and Gear Play Model with Friction
2019 IEEE International Conference on Mechatronics (ICM), 2019Despite its significance, only few mathematical models for backlash and gear play have been published. This contribution discusses the most notable modeling approaches in current literature, and employs them to simulate the drive line of a test bed that was intentionally equipped with a pre-designed backlash spot.
