A drive system is generally located at the front of the engine and is used to drive essential engine components such as camshaft, fuel pump and oil pump. All gears are finally connected to the crank gear which provides the input power to all other gears.

This paper distinguishes, as a subject worthy of recognition and study in its own right, the class of mechanism comprising gears mounted with axes coincident with the pivot points of a linkage. The same concept serves for the analysis of the assembly conditions of multiple-contact gear trains, in which a ‘virtual’ linkage may be visualized. A variety

Abstract A special type of superimposed planetary gear train is introduced, in which the axes of the central gears of a secondary planetary gear train are collinear with the axis of the planet gear of the primary planetary gear train. The number of possible variations of such planetary gear trains are dealt with, and the simpler types are shown.

Minimization of Gear-Train Inertia
Journal of Fluids Engineering, 1954Abstract In the design of a system consisting of a motor driving an inertial load through gearing it is often necessary that the acceleration of the load be a maximum. The gear ratios giving a maximum acceleration are determined here either for a specified over-all train ratio, or for the condition where the over-all ratio must be found.
