Was a Roman Cohort Stationed at Ein Gedi?
Scripta Classica Israelica, 2020The evidence for a Roman military garrison being based at Ein Gedi between the First and Second Jewish Revolts, rests on the existence of a document from the Babatha archive witnessed by a Roman centurion and the remains of a ‘military-style’ bath house. This commonly shared assumption is challenged in this paper.

Hadashot Arkheologiyot - Excavations and Surveys in Israel
In March 2022, a small stone anchor was discovered on the shore of ‘En Gedi bay (map ref. 237533/595373; Fig. 1) by a member of Kibbutz ‘En Gedi. The find was transferred to archaeologist Gideon Hadas, member of Kibbutz ‘En Gedi, who has published similar anchors in the past, and the IAA subdistrict archaeologist Davida Eisenberg-Degen was notified.
