Topography‐Regulated Screening Platform for Myoblast Contact Guidance

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This study develops a topography‐regulated screening platform (12 gradients in 96‐topography‐well plate) enabling analysis of skeletal muscle morphogenesis. The topography‐induced cell morphology changed, cell polarization, and myotube differentiation, establishing an evaluative framework for generating pathologically relevant myotube phenotypes to ...

AI‐Powered Framework for Evaluating Drug Efficacy for Three‐Dimensional In Vitro Cancer Models in Robot‐Assisted Production

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
An AI‐powered, robot‐assisted framework automatically produces, images, and analyzes 3D tumor spheroids to evaluate drug efficacy. Integrated modules handle spheroid formation, live/dead staining, brightfield imaging, and automated image analysis, including spheroid segmentation, viability and metrics to assess the drug treatment efficacy. The workflow

Detecting horizontal gene transfer with metagenomics co-barcoding sequencing

open access: yesMicrobiology Spectrum
Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is the process through which genetic information is transferred between different genomes and that played a crucial role in bacterial evolution.

Mitochondrial Genome Transfer to Tumor Cells Breaks The Rules and Establishes a New Precedent in Cancer Biology

open access: yesMolecular & Cellular Oncology, 2018
Horizontal gene transfer is known to occur in bacteria and archaea whereas higher organisms including mammals undergo vertical transfer. Our recent results demonstrate horizontal transfer of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from normal host cells to tumor cells

Role of Horizontal Gene Transfer in Bacteria

open access: yes, 2018
This paper documents an overview on the current knowledge of gene transfer in bacteria with emphasis on the role of horizontal gene transfer, in contrast to the numerous gaps in our understanding of Bacterial gene expression.

Horizontal gene transfer: Its impacts and influences [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
2343-2352In genomic and biological evolution, horizontal gene transfer (HGT) has been highly debated. The idea of horizontal gene transfer is the non-genealogical transfer of genetic substances between all forms of organisms including the marine ...

Collision‐Resilient Winged Drones Enabled by Tensegrity Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Based on structures of birds such as the woodpeck, this article presents the collision‐resilient aerial robot, SWIFT. SWIFT leverages tensegrity structures in the fuselage and wings which allow it to undergo large deformations in a crash, without sustaining damage. Experiments show that SWIFT can reduce impact forces by 70% over conventional structures.

Vertical and horizontal gene transfer in lichens

open access: yes, 2013
Lichens are symbiotic organisms, which consist of a mycobiont (fungus) and a photobiont (green alga or cyanobacteria). They inhabit a wide range of ecological niches.
