General relativity without general relativity

Physical Review D, 1978
Recently one of us proposed a general theory of variable rest masses (VMT) compatible with post-Newtonian solar-system experiments for a wide range of its two parameters r and q, provided the asymptotic value of its fundamental field f is in a certain narrow range.

General Covariance in General Relativity?

General Relativity and Gravitation, 1995
In the authors' words, ``the mathematical approach to general relativity insists that all coordinate systems are equal''. In contradiction to this ``doctrine'' the authors claim that, for some problems in general relativity, restriction to a subclass of coordinates is not only convenient to simplify calculations but even necessary to understand the ...

Local relative motion in general relativity

Canadian Journal of Physics, 1979
The distinction is drawn between problems in which single particle motion has physical significance and those in which relative motion between pairs of particles must be considered. Local relative motion is considered from the standpoint of the equation of geodesic deviation, expressed in arbitrary coordinates and in geodesic Fermi coordinates.

Topology in General Relativity

Journal of Mathematical Physics, 1967
A number of theorems and definitions which are useful in the global analysis of relativistic world models are presented. It is shown in particular that, under certain conditions, changes in the topology of spacelike sections can occur if and only if the model is acausal. Two new covering manifolds, embodying certain properties of the universal covering

Observables in General Relativity

Reviews of Modern Physics, 1961
The notion of observable in general relativity differs profoundly from the corresponding concept in special relativity and in Newtonian physics. This is because in general relativity fixation of a frame of reference and gauge transformations are intertwined in a manner not encountered in any other area of physics.

Lectures on General Relativity

General Relativity and Gravitation, 2002
The paper is a collection of 5 lectures of the author. The first part is devoted to the question of boundary conditions in gravitational radiation theory. For the gravitational radiation a condition similar to the ``Ausstrahlungsbedingung'' of Sommerfeld is suggested.

The zilch in general relativity

Il Nuovo Cimento, 1965
The conditions for the vanishing of the covariant divergence of traceless, bilinear combinations of Van der Waerden spinors are investigated for the electromagnetic field in the presence of gravitation, and the free gravitational field.

Milestones of general relativity

Reports on Progress in Physics, 2016
Abstract We present a summary for non-specialists of the special issue of the journal Classical and Quantum Gravity on ‘Milestones of general relativity’, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the theory.

The Beauty of General Relativity

Foundations of Science, 1997
The author proposes to add another dichotomy to the list of essential tensions proposed by Professor Duda, namely beauty and ugliness. Physicists believe that only beautiful theories describe the world correctly, and that General Relativity is one of the most beautiful physical theories.

The Buzz of General Relativity

Science, 1999
Neutron stars and black holes have the strongest gravity, and hence--according to Einstein9s general theory of relativity--curve space-time the tightest, of all known objects in the universe. Observations by NASA9s Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) are now providing the first direct measurements of the orbital motion of matter in these strongly curved
