Exploring dietary adaptations in Ursus minimus: a 3D geometric morphometric analysis of the mandible

open access: yesBoreas
The extinct bear Ursus minimus, which lived in Europe during the Pliocene and possibly Early Pleistocene, is considered the common ancestor of all modern Ursini. U. minimus is thought to have been omnivorous, with a preference for invertebrates.

Transfer Learning Approaches in Bioprocess Engineering: Opportunities and Challenges

open access: yesBiotechnology and Bioengineering, Volume 123, Issue 6, Page 1417-1431, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Transfer learning (TL) has recently emerged as a promising approach to overcoming one of the key limitations of bioprocess engineering: data scarcity. By leveraging knowledge from one bioprocess to another, TL allows existing models and data sets to be reused efficiently, accelerating process development, improving prediction accuracy, and ...

Three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging-based statistical shape analysis and machine learning-based prediction of patellofemoral instability

open access: yesScientific Reports
This study performed three-dimensional (3D) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based statistical shape analysis (SSA) by comparing patellofemoral instability (PFI) and normal femur models, and developed a machine learning (ML)-based prediction model ...

Metagenomic mining of environmental resistomes: Comparative performance of deep learning and alignment‐based annotation methods

open access: yesiMetaOmics, Volume 3, Issue 2, June 2026.
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in marine environments poses intricate challenges due to the ecological complexity of microbial communities and environmental gradients. This study compares various antimicrobial resistance gene (ARG) annotation tools and databases, focusing on deep learning approaches versus traditional alignment‐based methods, to ...

Macroscale Gradient‐Informed Neural Oscillation Topography in Parkinson's Disease

open access: yesMovement Disorders, Volume 41, Issue 6, Page 1434-1444, June 2026.
Abstract Background Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by large‐scale disruptions in beta and gamma oscillations. Although subcortical beta power is an established biomarker for current adaptive deep brain stimulation (aDBS), it may not fully capture the global pathophysiological burden and the macroscale hierarchical reorganization of the ...

Morphological and Biochemical Insights Into the Renoprotective Effects of Combined N‐Acetylcysteine and Glycine Treatment in Experimental Diabetic Nephropathy

open access: yesPharmacology Research &Perspectives, Volume 14, Issue 3, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a major microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus and the leading cause of end‐stage renal disease. Oxidative stress and inflammation are central drivers of DN progression, yet no effective therapies exist to prevent or delay renal injury. This study investigated the renoprotective effects of glycine (GLY), N‐

Flooding affects fluctuating asymmetry but not growth of a riparian orbweaving spider

open access: yesEcological Entomology, Volume 51, Issue 3, Page 547-557, June 2026.
In a mesocosm experiment we assessed the impact of flood on aquatic insect emergence and on spider development using geometric morphometric analysis of fluctuating asymmetry. We observed 45% higher emergence in flooded mesocosm throughout the season. Spiders did not grow bigger but exhibited ~15% lower fluctuating asymmetry than in controls.
