Cohorts, overlapping generations and consanguinity estimates

open access: yesAnnals of Human Biology, 1983
A number of problems in human population genetics involve determining the effects of non-random mating due to cultural or geographic factors, and therefore requires determination of expectations based on random mating. These expectations are usually taken to be the arithmetic mean of the contributions of all possible pairs drawn from a subpopulation of

Concept Forum - The third age: class, cohort or generation? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
In this paper we consider some of the ways that the third age can be thought about and studied. Taking the work of Peter Laslett as our key source, we explore his 'aspirational' approach toward redefining post-working life and look at some of its ...

Next‐generation proteomics improves lung cancer risk prediction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This is one of very few studies that used prediagnostic blood samples from participants of two large population‐based cohorts. We identified, evaluated, and validated an innovative protein marker model that outperformed an established risk prediction model and criteria employed by low‐dose computed tomography in lung cancer screening trials.

ENTREPRENEURIAL ACUMEN OF ENGINEERING STUDENTS: INPUT IN UNDERSTANDING THE IMPULSE OF BUSINESS START-UPS AMONGST ENGINEER – ENTREPRENEURS IN THE PHILIPPINES

open access: yesInternational Journal of Industrial Management, 2017
The research aimed to identify the factors that predict the business intelligence of college students enrolled in engineering programs. Participants involved in study were students that belong to the generational cohort called neo-millennials.

Monitoring of circulating tumor DNA allows early detection of disease relapse in patients with operable breast cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Monitoring circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in patients with operable breast cancer can reveal disease relapse earlier than radiology in a subset of patients. The failure to detect ctDNA in some patients with recurrent disease suggests that ctDNA could serve as a supplement to other monitoring approaches.

LINC01116, a hypoxia‐lncRNA marker of pathological lymphangiogenesis and poor prognosis in lung adenocarcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The LINC01116 long noncoding RNA is induced by hypoxia and associated with poor prognosis and high recurrence rates in two cohorts of lung adenocarcinoma patients. Here, we demonstrate that besides its expression in cancer cells, LINC01116 is markedly expressed in lymphatic endothelial cells of the tumor stroma in which it participates in hypoxia ...

Virtual epilepsy patient cohort: generation and evaluation

open access: yesPLOS Computational Biology
AbstractEpilepsy is a prevalent brain disorder, characterized by sudden, abnormal brain activity, making it difficult to live with. One-third of people with epilepsy do not respond to anti-epileptic drugs. Drug-resistant epilepsy is treated with brain surgery.

Cell surface interactome analysis identifies TSPAN4 as a negative regulator of PD‐L1 in melanoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Using cell surface proximity biotinylation, we identified tetraspanin TSPAN4 within the PD‐L1 interactome of melanoma cells. TSPAN4 negatively regulates PD‐L1 expression and lateral mobility by limiting its interaction with CMTM6 and promoting PD‐L1 degradation.
