Why generative AI is different from designed technology regarding task-relatedness, user interaction, and agency

open access: yesBig Data & Society
Generative AI requires us to rethink what constitutes technology, how technology is socially constructed, and how technology is used. Our common understanding of technology is mainly derived from designed technology.

Field Report from Collaborative Research Center 1625: Heterogeneous Research Data Management Using Ontology Representations

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A unified research data management framework for heterogeneous materials data is presented. The system integrates multimodal datasets using ontologies and knowledge graphs, enabling interoperability and FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) data principles. By linking data across scales and workflows, it supports reproducible, Artifitial

Generative AI and the Attribution of Credit in Artistic Creation

open access: yes
Generative AI systems that produce images from user prompts raise controversial questions about authorship, creativity, originality and copyright. Who is the creator of AI-generated images, and who should get credit for them?

Deception and manipulation in generative AI

open access: yesPhilosophical Studies
Large language models now possess human-level linguistic abilities in many contexts. This raises the concern that they can be used to deceive and manipulate on unprecedented scales, for instance spreading political misinformation on social media. In future, agentic AI systems might also deceive and manipulate humans for their own ends.

A Knowledge‐Based Approach for Understanding and Managing Additive Manufacturing Data

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Additive manufacturing processes generate a large amount of data. Effectively managing, understanding, and retrieving information from this data remains a major challenge. Therefore, we propose an ontology‐based approach to integrate heterogeneous data, enable semantic queries, and support decision‐making.

Current Status and Challenges in Data Collection for Aerospace Coatings Deposited by Plasma Spraying

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
An innovative approach has been integrated into the GRENAT project to optimize plasma spraying and coating performance. Raw materials are accelerated and melted in the plasma generated by torches, creating coatings. Monitoring sensors collect process data which are combined with ex situ characterization data.

Workflow for Design of Experiments‐Based Modeling of Species Transport and Growth Kinetics in GaN Hydride Vapor Phase Epitaxy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A novel workflow for investigating hydride vapor phase epitaxy for GaN bulk crystal growth is proposed. It combines Design of experiments (DoE) with physical simulations of mass transport and crystal growth kinetics, serving as an intermediate step between DoE and experiments.
