CIRCUMNAVIGATING NON-EQUIVALENCE IN LEGAL LANGUAGES: A TRILINGUAL CASE STUDY OF GENERIC-SPECIFIC CONCEPTS AND TERMS

open access: yesJournal of Teaching English for Specific and Academic Purposes, 2019
Studies of Language for specific purposes (LSP) aim to mastering particular terms of the target discourse community in the given field of knowledge. This cannot be achieved without comprehending the concepts denoted by the terms and their generic-specific relations which is not always the case in popular usage by media and translation.

Licensing Digital Content With A Generic Ontology: Escaping From The Rights Expression Language Jungle [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
International audienceDigital contents distributed over the internet are regulated by law and by technical management systems. The latter include a semantic component that describes licenses, i.e. rights of use which are granted to the user.

Proteins, Processing, and Properties of Adhesive Fluid Condensates Purified from Mussels

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Mussels exhibit an unmatched proficiency for adhering to wet surfaces in salty environments—a remarkable ability that could inspire new biomedical and technical glues. The fluid protein condensates used to form the underwater mussel glue are extracted, reconstituted and characterized with advanced spectroscopy and nanomechanical analysis, revealing ...

A Specific Role of Hippocampal NMDA Receptors and Arc Protein in Rapid Encoding of Novel Environmental Representations and a More General Long-Term Consolidation Function [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, 2019
Activation of the NMDA receptor (NMDAR) has been proposed to be a key event responsible for the structural changes that occur in neurons during learning and memory formation. It has been extensively studied yet no consensus has been reached on its mnemonic role as both NMDAR dependent and independent forms of learning have been observed.

Sharp-Interface Limit of a Fluctuating Phase-Field Model

open access: yes, 2005
We present a derivation of the sharp-interface limit of a generic fluctuating phase-field model for solidification. As a main result, we obtain a sharp-interface projection which presents noise terms in both the diffusion equation and in the moving ...

Predicting Atomic Charges in MOFs by Topological Charge Equilibration

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
An atomic charge prediction method is presented that is able to accurately reproduce ab‐initio‐derived reference charges for a large number of metal–organic frameworks. Based on a topological charge equilibration scheme, static charges that fulfill overall neutrality are quickly generated.

Physical Realizations: Transforming into Physical Embodiments of Concepts in the Design of Mechanical Movements

open access: yesAdvances in Mechanical Engineering, 2013
Conceptual design involves identification of required functions of the intended design, generation of concepts to fulfill these functions, and evaluation of these concepts to select the most promising ones for further development. The focus of this paper

Disease severity accounts for minimal variance of quality of life in people with dementia and their carers: analyses of cross-sectional data from the MODEM study

open access: yesBMC Geriatrics, 2020
Background Due to the progressive nature of dementia, it is important to understand links between disease severity and health-related outcomes. The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between disease severity and the quality of life (QoL) of

Nano‐ and Micro‐Sized Solid Materials Used as Antiviral Agents

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Due to the rise of viral infections in humans and possible viral outbreaks, the use of nano‐ or micro‐sized materials as antiviral agents is rapidly increasing. This review explores their antiviral properties against RNA and DNA viruses, either as a prevention or a treatment tool, by delving into their mechanisms of action and how to properly assess ...
