Children and Genetic Identification of Talent

Hastings Center Report, 2011
The regulation of direct-to-consumer genetic testing has till now focused on identifying predispositions to specific health problems and quality issues in testing, such as analytical and clinical validity criteria. In the United States, for example, the Food and Drug Administration warned that federal regulations for medical devices will apply to ...

Population genetics for target identification

Drug Discovery Today: Technologies, 2004
In this review, we address how to best use data from the Human Genome Project to discover new drug targets for common disease. We focus on population genetic approaches to identify variants associated with disease and how these can illuminate new targets and pathways for intervention.

Genetic Sex Identification in Orangutans

Anthropologischer Anzeiger, 2003
To date, no established protocol for genetic sex identification in orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) exists. In nearly all apes (gibbons, gorillas, chimpanzees, and humans), genetic sex identification is possible using the amelogenin gene because copies located on X and Y chromosomes have different sizes.

Genetic clustering for the identification of species

Proceedings of the 13th annual conference companion on Genetic and evolutionary computation, 2011
Artificial life simulations can yield distinct populations of agents representing different adaptations to a common environment or specialized adaptations to different environments. Here we apply a standard clustering algorithm to the genomes of such agents to discover and characterize these subpopulations.

Benefits and Burdens of Genetic Carrier Identification

Western Journal of Nursing Research, 1997
This qualitative study examined experiences of adults requesting genetic-carrier testingforfour autosomal-recessive and X-linked-recessive disorders. The sample consisted of 34 adults with a positive family history or membership in an ethnic group at risk for the inherited disorder A semistructured interview guide was used to collect data during an ...

PCR: Identification of Genetic Polymorphisms

2017
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) enables the amplification of a specific sequence of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) through the process of three main steps: template DNA denaturation, annealing of the primers to complementary sequences, and primer extension to synthesize DNA strands. By using this method, the target sequence will be copied and amplified at

Genetic search for object identification

1998
We attack the problem of recognizing real, planar objects from two-dimensional, intensity images taken from arbitrary viewpoints using genetic algorithms. More specifically, we use genetic algorithms to search for a geometric mapping that brings subsets of points comprising the model and subsets of points comprising the scene into alignment.

Positional Identification of Microdeletions with Genetic Markers

Human Heredity, 2003
The positional identification of genetic factors for both simple and complex diseases is difficult. There is increasing evidence that small deletions are a fairly common cause for many genetic diseases and some complex diseases. To date, no statistical basis has been available for the identification of microdeletions in family studies. Here, we present

FRICTION IDENTIFICATION WITH GENETIC ALGORITHMS

IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 2005
Abstract Identification of the function part of the analytical model of the movement of a mass along vertical guide way is made. Indeed, knowledge of friction parameters is necessary to detect wear or mechanical failure. Because of the non linearity the identification is made using Genetic Algorithms (GA).

Genetic identification of thiosulfate sulfurtransferase as an adipocyte-expressed anti-diabetic target in mice selected for leanness

Nature Medicine, 2016
The discovery of genetic mechanisms for resistance to obesity and diabetes may illuminate new therapeutic strategies for the treatment of this global health challenge.
