Length-weight relationships of marine fishes from the central Brazilian coast [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Parameters of the length-weight relationship are presented for 85 fish species from the marine and estuarine regions of the central Brazilian coast (latitude 13° to 23° S). Three different methods were used. A non-linear iterative process using the quasi-

Fish communities of two tidal creeks in the Pinheiros bay, state of Paraná, southern Brazil [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Tidal creeks are meandering channels that are highly influenced by tidal changes and can experience substantial variation in salinity and depth over the course of the same day.

Antagonistic Rewiring and Turnover Patterns in a Neotropical Fish–Parasite Metanetwork

open access: yesFreshwater Biology, Volume 70, Issue 7, July 2025.
ABSTRACT Integrating beta‐diversity and network analyses is an emerging approach for understanding the spatial structure of species communities. For instance, although the presence of hosts affects parasite species distribution, environmental factors can either restrict or promote the occurrence of certain parasite species by changing the abundance of ...

Tissue-specific mercury concentrations in two catfish species from the Brazilian coast

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Oceanography, 2012
Some regions of Brazil have particularly high levels of mercury (Hg) emissions due to industrial activities, and their fish species may therefore suffer high levels of contamination through bioaccumulation. In this paper we assess Hg contamination in the

On the myology of the cephalic region and pectoral girdle of three arid species, Arius heudeloti, Genidens genidens and Bagre marinus, and comparison with other catfishes (Teleostei: Siluriformes) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
The muscles of the cephalic region and pectoral girdle of Arius heudeloti, Genidens genidens and Bagre marinus are described and compared with those of non-ariid siluriforms.

Assessing Fish Community Structure and Diversity Across Environmental Gradients in a Tropical Bay

open access: yesMarine Ecology, Volume 46, Issue 2, March 2025.
ABSTRACT Understanding the relationship between species distribution and the environment across spatial gradients is crucial for biodiversity evaluation. We surveyed fish populations in a tropical bay, covering a spatial gradient from the outer zone with favorable marine conditions to the inner zone affected by human activities.

Otolith edge fingerprints as approach for stock identification of Genidens barbus [PDF]

open access: yesEstuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science, 2017
Abstract The purpose of this paper is to assess the use of multi-elemental otolith fingerprints as a tool to delimit catfish Genidens barbus fish stocks in four estuaries from the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Barium:Calcium (Ca), Magnesium:Ca, Manganese:Ca, Sodium:Ca and Strontium:Ca ratios in the otolith edge were determined by LA-ICPMS. PERMANOVA

Integrated use of otolith shape and microchemistry to assess Genidens barbus fish stock structure

open access: yesEstuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science, 2021
Abstract Otolith composition (edge vs core: Mg/Ca, Mn/Ca, Zn/Ca, Sr/Ca, Ba/Ca) by LA-ICP-MS and Elliptic Fourier analysis were integrated to evaluate spatial segregation of adult and juvenile stages of Genidens barbus from specimens collected from five coastal areas off Brazil (Paraiba do Sul River, Guanabara Bay, Itapanhau River mouth, Paranagua Bay)

Ichthyofauna as an environmental quality indicator of the Bertioga Channel, São Paulo (Brazil) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The aim of this study was to investigate the ichthyofauna structure in the region of the north outfall of the Bertioga Channel (São Paulo, Brazil) and the possible effects of the environmental quality loss.

The marine catfish Genidens barbus (Ariidae) fisheries in the state of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil: diagnosis and management suggestions [PDF]

open access: yesAnais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências, 2020
In this study we analyzed data on fishing landings of Genidens barbus in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, from 2000 to 2014. An estimation of the total production was obtained through the analysis of 781,856 landings, among which 87% were categorized as artisanal and 13% as industrial. The abundance index showed some stability in the period.
