L'émergence, depuis une vingtaine d'années, d'enseignements de langues optionnels et obligatoires dans l'enseignement supérieur a permis à la branche "langues de spécialités" de se développer. Aujourd'hui, il existe même un DEA d'Anglais de spécialité. Cependant, la branche "langue générale" reste vivace.
