Investigating palaeodune orientations and contemporary wind regimes in Southeast Kazakhstan using a semi‐automated mapping framework

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 49, Issue 14, Page 4553-4569, November 2024.
We present a semi‐automated framework applying object‐based analysis of Sentinel‐2 and digital elevation data to map dunes and quantify their orientation. The approach is applied to five dune fields in the Ili‐Balkhash region in Kazakhstan. Comparing bedform orientations with the modern wind regime, we find (1) better alignment considering only strong ...

Evaluating the potential of multi-view data extraction from small Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs) for object-based classification for Wetland land covers

open access: yesGIScience & Remote Sensing, 2019
Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs) have the potential to provide multi-view data, but the approaches used to extract the multi-view data from UAS and investigation of their use in image classification are currently unavailable in publications to our best ...

Fusion of pixel-based and object-based features for classification of urban hyperspectral remote sensing data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Hyperspectral imagery contains a wealth of spectral and spatial information that can improve target detection and recognition performance. Typically, spectral information is inferred pixel-based, while spatial information related to texture, context and ...

Assessment of habitat quality and landscape connectivity for forest-dependent cracids in the Sierra Madre del Sur Mesoamerican biological corridor, Mexico [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Assessing landscape connectivity allows us to identify critical areas that impede or facilitate the movement of organisms and their genes and to plan their conservation and management.

A hierarchical method and workflow for the semi‐automated mapping of valley bottom geomorphic units using publicly available remote sensing datasets

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 49, Issue 11, Page 3524-3540, 15 September 2024.
We develop a hierarchical method to map geomorphic units across valley bottoms. The method accommodates user decisions regarding effort invested versus quality and accuracy. The method produces 12 preliminary, 20 refined, and four sub‐types of geomorphic units. The method can be applied to all river types.

Optimal spatial resolution of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-acquired imagery for species classification in a heterogeneous grassland ecosystem

open access: yesGIScience & Remote Sensing, 2018
Species composition is an essential biophysical attribute of vegetative ecosystems. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-acquired imagery with ultrahigh spatial resolution is a valuable data source for investigating species composition at a fine scale, which is

Quantifying spatial complexity in submerged aquatic vegetation landscapes using remote sensing: Lessons from simulated and real landscapes

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 69, Issue 7, Page 1465-1480, July 2024.
Abstract The spatial organization of vegetation has been shown to be a strong indicator of ecological state in multiple ecosystems. In this study, we analyze the relationships between spatial complexity metrics in submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) landscapes, and we explore the potential of satellite remote sensing to quantify these metrics in ...

METODE GEOBIA DALAM KLASIFIKASI ZONA GEOMORFOLOGI TERUMBU KARANG DI PULAU POMBO

open access: yesJGE (Jurnal Geofisika Eksplorasi), 2022
