Afghanite: A New Silicate‐Matrix Reference Material for In Situ Halogen and Sulfur Microanalysis

open access: yesGeostandards and Geoanalytical Research, EarlyView.
Key Points A new silicate matrix reference material for in situ chlorine and sulfur determination. Homogeneous across all measured elements. No matrix effects for Cl when calibrating silicate matrices, in contrast to scapolite, which causes systematic Cl overestimation of up to 13%.

SC‐550: A Sintered Calcite Reference Material for In Situ U‐Pb Geochronology

open access: yesGeostandards and Geoanalytical Research, EarlyView.
Key Points New calcite reference material (SC‐550) produced by high‐temperature and high‐pressure sintering of nano‐particulate powder from a microbial limestone. Homogeneous U content (2.3 ± 0.4 μg g‐1) and U‐Pb isotope ratios (< 0.6% RSD for 207Pb/206Pb; < 3% RSD for 238U/206Pb).

Quantification of Sulfur Speciation in Apatites: Comparison of the XAS, XPS and EPMA Techniques

open access: yesGeostandards and Geoanalytical Research, EarlyView.
Key Points Sulfur speciation in apatites has been determined by S K‐edge X‐ray absorption near‐edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, S 2p X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). XANES provides the most sensitive and accurate quantification of sulfur speciation.

Anaerobic Attenuation of Diisopropyl Ether (DIPE) in Groundwater: Kinetics and Implications for Monitored Natural Attenuation

open access: yesGroundwater Monitoring &Remediation, EarlyView.
Abstract Diisopropyl ether (DIPE) is a branched ether used as a solvent, extractant, and gasoline additive. While aerobic biodegradation of DIPE has been documented, attenuation under anaerobic conditions (typical of groundwater impacted by petroleum hydrocarbons and fuel oxygenates) remains poorly constrained.
