Calcitic coverings of the lower jaw of Jurassic ammonites exhibit Bouligand-like structures

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
Well-preserved layered structures have been reported for Jurassic ammonites’ aptychi, but the role, function, and origin of the lamination has been unclear.

Geochemical Equilibrium and Processes in Seawater

open access: yesGeosciences, 2018
The geochemical equilibrium in seawater must be observed taking into account the chemical and geological, as well as biological, processes. The concept of equilibrium takes into account the composition of the system and the kinetics of the reactions ...

Primary crustal melt compositions: Insights into the controls, mechanisms and timing of generation from kinetics experiments and melt inclusions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We explore the controls, mechanisms and timing of generation of primary melts and their compositions, and show that the novel studies of melt inclusions in migmatites can provide important insights into the processes of crustal anatexis of a particular ...

Bioenergy Cropping Reduces the Spatiotemporal Scaling of Soil Bacterial Biodiversity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Consistent with patterns observed in plant and animal communities, soil bacterial communities exhibit significant species–time–area and phylogenetic–time–area relationships independent of nested structure. Bioenergy cropping significantly reduces the spatiotemporal scaling rates, particularly in sandy loam soils.

Predicting potential pollutant release from waste rock at the abandoned Beck mine (Karelia, Russia) by equilibrium kinetic modeling [PDF]

open access: yesBulletin of the Geological Society of Finland
The Beck mine, located in the Republic of Karelia, Russia, is an abandoned mining site with significant potential for environmental contamination due to the presence of potential pollutants in its waste rocks.

Prediction of Acid Mine Drainage Treatment by Open Limestone-Alkaline Material Channel and Implications for the Large Scale Implementation of Passive Treatment

open access: yesJournal of MMIJ, 2022
In decades, various studies on passive treatment methods of acid mine drainage (AMD) have been actively conducted in order to reduce the cost of AMD treatment.

“Hidden” Landscape of Prehistoric Burial Monuments: The Use of Remote Sensing in the Detection of Neolithic Long Barrows in Bohemia (Czech Republic)

open access: yesArchaeological Prospection, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Neolithic long barrows are among the earliest monumental structures in Europe, yet in many parts of Central Europe their surface expression has been largely erased by long‐term agricultural activity. This study evaluates the potential of integrated remote sensing approaches for identifying and contextualizing long barrows and associated ...

Geochemical Consequences of Melt Percolation: The Upper Mantle as a Chromatographic Column [PDF]

open access: yes, 1987
As magmas rise toward the surface, they traverse regions of the mantle and crust with which they are not in equilibrium; to the extent that time and the intimacy of their physical contact permit, the melts and country rocks will interact chemically. We

An Idea to Explore: From How to Why: Using Evolutionary Biochemistry to Inspire Biochemistry Education

open access: yesBiochemistry and Molecular Biology Education, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Traditional biochemistry instruction often emphasizes mechanistic detail, that is, how molecules and pathways function, without equally addressing why they have their present forms. This fact‐centered approach can leave students overwhelmed and disconnected from the broader scientific narrative.

Geochemical modeling of gold precipitation conditions in the Bloco do Butiá Mine, Lavras do Sul/Brazil

open access: yesAnais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências, 2005
A geochemical modeling of gold deposition was performed using the EQ3/EQ6 software package using conditions inferred from geological, petrographic, geochemical and fluid inclusion data from the Bloco do Butiá gold mine, Lavras do Sul, RS.
