Microscopic time‐dependent mechanical behavior of shale derived from nanoindentation
This study conducted grid nanoindentation creep tests to systematically analyze the microscopic creep behaviors of shale. Based on the analysis of creep strain rate sensitivity, the primary mechanism of microscopic creep in shale was found to be the extension and closure of microcracks.

Molecular Structure and Rotational Dynamics in the Acetonitrile:Acetylene (1:2) Plastic Co-Crystal at Titan Conditions [PDF]
The surface of Saturn's moon Titan is coated with small molecule organic solids termed cryominerals. Cryominerals play an analogous role to minerals on Earth in Titan's surface geology and geochemistry. To develop a predictive understanding of Titan's surface geochemistry, we need to characterize the structure and dynamics of cryominerals at the ...

A ~60 Myr periodicity is common to marine-87Sr/86Sr, fossil biodiversity, and large-scale sedimentation: what does the periodicity reflect? [PDF]
We find that the marine 87Sr/86Sr record shows a significant periodicity of 59.3 \pm 3 Myr. The 87Sr/86Sr record is 171{\deg} \pm 12{\deg}out of phase with a 62 (\pm 3) Myr periodicity previously reported in the record of marine-animal diversity. These periodicities are close to 58 (\pm 4) Myr cycles found for the number of gap-bounded sedimentary ...

Elevated temperature effects on swelling pressure of compacted bentonite
We present a set of new experimental investigations on the effects of elevated temperature on the swelling pressure development of compacted bentonite. This research was motivated by an emerging interest in using bentonite as a plug material in oil and gas well abandonment.

Chemistry of the Earth's Earliest Atmosphere [PDF]
In this chapter we describe chemistry of the early atmosphere of the Earth during and shortly after its formation where there is little if any geological record. We review the arguments for a secondary origin of the terrestrial atmosphere, that is by outgassing during and/or after accretion rather than by capture of solar nebula gas.

Upon conceptualization of structural behavior, foundations in terms of their form are divided into linear (1D), planar (2D), and volumetric (3D). Regarding the load transfer mechanisms, linear foundation systems are considered vector‐acting, planar foundations are divided into section and surface‐acting, and volumetric ones are recognized as block ...

Martian Methyl Chloride. A lesson in uncertainty [PDF]
The MSL Lander Curiosity has recently detected methyl halides coming from heated samples of Martian soil. This is reminiscent of similar findings in the Viking Lander spacecraft. In the 1970s a consensus developed quickly explaining the methyl halides as contamination originating from the spacecraft, and ignoring lines of evidence that the two ...

Stress analysis of crack characteristic of anthracite under dynamic loading
In this article, the dynamic compression test of anthracite under five strain rates is carried out, the evolution law of three kinds of crack characteristic stress is analyzed, and a prediction model of the crack characteristic stress threshold considering the strain rate effect is established. Then, the rationality of crack characteristic stress under
