The purpose of this chapter is to discuss current methods and practices in two very fundamental aspects of spatial analysis. Geocoding can be defined as the process by which an entity on the earth’s surface, a household, for example, is given a label identifying its location with respect to some common point or frame of reference.

The P4 system, proposed in the study, is a new method of geocoding that aims to address some of the disadvantages of earlier systems. This system employs rectangular cells that are assigned an alphanumeric number whose length is determined by the cell's level of subdivision (i.e., cell dimensions).
