Habitat heterogeneity overrides local processes to drive the species–area relationship of benthic macroinvertebrates in shallow floodplain lakes

open access: yesEcography, Volume 2025, Issue 8, August 2025.
The species–area relationship (SAR) on islands describes how the numbers of species increase with increasing island size (or island‐like habitat, such as lakes). Despite its conceptual importance, there is considerable uncertainty surrounding its shape in freshwater lakes, as well as the potential mechanisms that underlie the SAR.

Some of these are not like the others: Relative thermal sensitivity among anuran species of the Southeast United States

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2025.
Abstract Estimating how close a species is to its upper thermal limits (i.e., warming tolerance, a thermal sensitivity index) and how that proximity changes across space enables spatially explicit identification of species with increased extinction risk as temperatures increase. Yet, thermal sensitivity is often difficult to calculate because it is the

Analysis of Factors Affecting Quality in Structural Magnetic Resonance Images

open access: yesHuman Brain Mapping, Volume 46, Issue 11, 01 August 2025.
We found that image quality rating (IQR) is influenced by scanner software, MR protocols, spatial resolution, and participant age (increasing in men but not women), while remaining consistent over time. IQR is a reliable metric for improving neuroimaging consistency.
