What Is the Energy Budget of Subduction Zone Hazards?

open access: yesReviews of Geophysics, Volume 63, Issue 2, June 2025.
Abstract Subduction zones are host to some of the largest and most devastating geohazards on Earth. The magnitude of these hazards is often measured by the amount of energy they release over short periods of time, which itself depends on how much stored energy is available for the geologic processes that drive these hazards.

Structures and Leucogranites in the Eastern Himalayan Orogen From Reprocessed INDEPTH‐I Deep Seismic Reflection Profile

open access: yesTectonics, Volume 44, Issue 6, June 2025.
Abstract The INDEPTH‐I seismic reflection transect provides a unique data set for understanding active mountain‐building processes during continental collision in the Himalaya and has played a key role in the development of ductile extrusion and channel flow concepts.

Readjustment of the national geodetic vertical datum

open access: yesEos, Transactions American Geophysical Union, 1980
New geodetic techniques and computer technology are providing scientists in the United States and other countries of North America with the precise tools needed to modernize the North American horizontal and vertical geodetic control networks—a web of geodetic survey monuments that spans the continent.

Integrated Seismic Refraction, Reflection, and Rayleigh Wave Imaging at Kilbourne Hole, New Mexico: Implications for Lunar Subsurface Exploration

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Volume 130, Issue 6, June 2025.
Abstract Maars are volcanoes with a central crater surrounded by an ejecta ring formed through surface explosive processes from underlying magma interacting with fluids. The study of terrestrial maar volcanoes, as analogs to explosive volcanic vents on the Moon and other planets, can improve our understanding of planetary volcanism and evolution.

Numerical Simulation of Sound‐Side Barrier‐Island Inundation and Breaching During Hurricane Dorian (2019)

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface, Volume 130, Issue 6, June 2025.
Abstract Hurricane‐induced morphological changes and associated community hazards along sandy, barrier‐island coastlines have been studied primarily from the perspective of ocean‐side attack by storm‐driven ocean surge and large waves. Thus, our understanding of long‐term barrier island morphological change focuses on beach erosion, overwash, and inlet

Quantifying the Impact of Iowa's Flood‐Mitigation Reservoirs on Sediment and Nutrient Loss

open access: yesJAWRA Journal of the American Water Resources Association, Volume 61, Issue 3, June 2025.
ABSTRACT Flood‐mitigation reservoirs have long been known to impact pollutant transport by retaining or removing incoming sediment and nutrients. However, historical reductions in these systems have rarely been well quantified. In this study, we used water quality data to estimate inputs and outputs of total suspended solids (TSS), two phosphorus (P ...
