Geographic variation in Internet connectivity
Proceedings of HICSS-29: 29th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 1996This paper presents a measure of Internet "connectivity" (number of connected companies per capita) normalized by the economic "size" of areas in the United States. We use cross sectional variation in connectivity to test some hypotheses about technology adoption. We find that areas in the South and Midwest have below average connectivity. Connectivity

Geographic variation in acoustic communication in anurans and its neuroethological implications
Geographic variation of traits may represent the first step for evolutionary divergence potentially leading to speciation. Signals are behavioral traits of particular interest for the study of variation at a geographic scale.

Geographical Variation in the Atlantic Salmon
Nature, 1971The discovery of a serum protein polymorphism in the Atlantic salmon has revealed the existence of genetically isolated populations sufficiently distinct to merit their separation into subspecies and races.

Explaining Geographic Variations
Medical Care, 1993The causes of geographic variations in the use of health care services continue to puzzle researchers. Some have proposed that physicians in geographic areas with high rates of use provide proportionally more unnecessary care than those in other areas. Available research does not support this hypothesis.

The Evolution of Geographic Variation in Birdsong
2007Publisher Summary This chapter outlines the evolution of geographic variation in birdsong. Studies of vocal signals in birds offer potentially useful opportunities for empirical tests of the relationships among geographic signal divergence, reproductive isolation, and speciation.

Epilepsia, 2012
SummaryPurpose: Given the strong association of stroke and epilepsy in older persons, and the existence of a Stroke Belt in the United States, we hypothesized that geographic variation in epilepsy prevalence would follow geographic patterns similar to stroke. Methods: We used a 2005 5% random sample of Medicare beneficiaries 65 and older in 48 U.S ...

Abstract The ascertainment of neural tube defects has been discussed in Chapter 3; some of the major conclusions are reviewed here. Anencephalus is a gross malformation, obvious to simple inspection, and is incompatible with survival beyond a few hours or days.

Geographical Variation of Cancer Mortality in Italy
International Journal of Epidemiology, 1985The distribution of death certification rates from various cancers or groups of cancers in broad Italian geographical areas (north/centre/south) was analysed. In both sexes, total cancer mortality was considerably elevated in the north of the country compared to southern regions (around 70% for males and 30% for females in the truncated 35-64 rate ...

Geographic Variation in Medicare Spending
New England Journal of Medicine, 2010In my third and fourth years of medical school at Duke University, I was totally engaged in learning clinical strategies and algorithms: when to admit a patient with chest pain from the emergency ward, when and how to work up dyspepsia, when to schedule laboratory work and ambulatory follow-up for stable hypertension.

Geographical Variations in Medicare Spending
Annals of Internal Medicine, 2003In this issue, Fisher and colleagues convincingly show that excellent outcomes for patients can be achieved in regions that do less, but do it right.
