Based on the formalism of General Relativity, we analyze generalizations of concepts used in conventional geodesy. One such concept is the Earth's geoid. We present our definition of the relativistic geoid in terms of the level sets of a time-independent redshift potential. Such a potential exists for any congruence of Killing observers, i.e.

Abstract This paper describes the determination of the geoid in Australia relative to the Australian Geodetic Datum by the method of astro-geodetic levelling. Gravity observations have been used to fill in detail, but the gravity results everywhere have been adjusted to the astro-geodetic framework. A preliminary geoid has been calculated for Papua and

This paper represents a milestone in the UNB effort to formulate an accurate and self-consistent theory for regional geoid determination. To get the geoid to a sub-centimetre accuracy, we had to formulate the theory in a spherical rather than linear approximation, advance the modelling of the effect of topographic mass density, formulate the solid ...

For use in oceanographic applications the geoid is ideally needed to a high accuracy and to a high resolution. In 1979 the cumulative geoid undulation error to spherical harmonic degree 20 was +or-1.4 m for the GEM10 potential coefficient model. Today the corresponding value has been reduced to +or-25 cm for GEM-T3 or +or-11 cm for the OSU91A model ...

At the end of 2003, a preliminary geoid of Serbia was determined by fitting the gravimetric geoid into undulations determined by GPS and leveling (GPS/dh) techniques. The gravimetric geoid was determined using data from regional gravimetric survey in Serbia (13,326 points) by applying collocation within the remove-restore method, and undulations GPS/dh

The author gives a summary of the preparatory work, collection of the needed gravity material, reduction method used, the gravity anomaly maps of different types needed, and the details of the method of computation of the geoid. Using the available materials, 6679 squares of 1° X 1°, four times larger than was available in 1928, several new gravity ...

This chapter discusses the methods used to determine a global representation of the Earth’s gravitational potential from a combination of satellite and terrestrial data. Knowledge of the gravity field is important for many different applications including the following: the calibration of inertial navigation equipment; the computation of geoid ...
