A Chilean Berry Concentrate Protects against Postprandial Oxidative Stress and Increases Plasma Antioxidant Activity in Healthy Humans

open access: yesOxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity, Volume 2017, Issue 1, 2017., 2017
This study formulated and characterized an antioxidant‐rich concentrate of berries (BPC‐350) produced in Chile, which was used to perform a crossover study aimed at determining the effect of the berries on the modulation of plasma postprandial oxidative stress and antioxidant status.

Medicinal Plants from North and Central America and the Caribbean Considered Toxic for Humans: The Other Side of the Coin

open access: yesEvidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Volume 2017, Issue 1, 2017., 2017
The consumption of medicinal plants has notably increased over the past two decades. People consider herbal products as safe because of their natural origin, without taking into consideration whether these plants contain a toxic principle. This represents a serious health problem.

Cytoprotective Mechanisms Mediated by Polyphenols from Chilean Native Berries against Free Radical‐Induced Damage on AGS Cells

open access: yesOxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity, Volume 2017, Issue 1, 2017., 2017
The prevalence of cytoprotective mechanisms induced by polyphenols such as activation of intracellular antioxidant responses (ICM) and direct free radical scavenging was investigated in native Chilean species of strawberries, raspberries, and currants.

Bioassay Directed Isolation and Biological Evaluation of Compounds Isolated from Rubus fairholmianus Gard.

open access: yesBioMed Research International, Volume 2014, Issue 1, 2014., 2014
The in vitro and in silico analysis of Rubus fairholmianus acetone extract for antioxidant, antiproliferative, and anti‐inflammatory activity led to the isolation of six compounds. Amongst all the six isolated compounds tested, 1‐(2‐hydroxyphenyl)‐4‐methylpentan‐1‐one (compound 1) and 2‐[(3‐methylbutoxy) carbonyl] benzoic acid (compound 2) were found ...

Modelling Spatio‐Temporal Relevancy in Urban Context‐Aware Pervasive Systems Using Voronoi Continuous Range Query and Multi‐Interval Algebra

open access: yesMobile Information Systems, Volume 9, Issue 3, Page 189-208, 2013., 2013
Space and time are two dominant factors in context‐aware pervasive systems which determine whether an entity is related to the moving user or not. This paper specifically addresses the use of spatio‐temporal relations for detecting spatio‐temporally relevant contexts to the user.

Combined Acquisition and Tracking Methods for GPS L1 C/A and L1C Signals

open access: yesInternational Journal of Navigation and Observation, Volume 2010, Issue 1, 2010., 2010
As part of the GPS modernization, the GPS L1 C/A signal will be augmented by the L1C signal. With this improvement, for the first time, several signals from the same constellation will be available at the same frequency. In this paper, an acquisition method is implemented to combine the GPS L1 C/A and L1C signals before correlation.

Forest Fire Risk Assessment: An Illustrative Example from Ontario, Canada

open access: yesJournal of Probability and Statistics, Volume 2010, Issue 1, 2010., 2010
This paper presents an analysis of ignition and burn risk due to wildfire in a region of Ontario, Canada using a methodology which is applicable to the entire boreal forest region. A generalized additive model was employed to obtain ignition risk probabilities and a burn probability map using only historic ignition and fire area data. Constructing fire

Open access to regional geoid models: the International Service for the Geoid [PDF]

open access: yesEarth System Science Data, 2020
Abstract. The International Service for the Geoid (ISG, https://www.isgeoid.polimi.it/ ) provides free access to a dedicated and comprehensive repository of geoid models through its website. In the archive, both the latest releases of the most important and well-known geoid models, as well as less recent or less known ones, are freely available, giving

An Oceanographer's Guide to GOCE and the Geoid [PDF]

open access: yesOcean Science, 2006
Abstract. A review is given of the geodetic concepts necessary for oceanographers to make use of satellite gravity data to define the geoid, and to interpret the resulting product. The geoid is defined, with particular attention to subtleties related to the representation of the permanent tide, and the way in which the geoid is represented in ocean ...
