Optimising carbon storage by land-management [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
As the UK’s largest non-government land-owner, the National Trust is committed to reducing its impact on climate change, recognising the importance of soil organic carbon (SOC), and its need for preservation.

Numerical investigation of natural fracture activation and leakage risk during CO2 sequestration in depleted sandstone reservoirs

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study investigates the hydro‐mechanical response and fracture evolution in depleted sandstone reservoirs during CO2 injection, considering both direct wellbore injection and hydraulic‐fracture‐assisted injection. The graphical abstract illustrates how CO2 injection induces dynamic stress redistribution, leading to natural fracture activation ...

Numerical simulations of the safety of geologic CO2 storage in saline aquifers in the Enping Sag, Pearl River Mouth Basin

open access: yesMeitian dizhi yu kantan
Background Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, excessive CO2 emissions have aggravated the greenhouse effect. Against this backdrop, CO2 capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology has emerged as a critical countermeasure ...

Combining geologic carbon storage with geothermal energy production

open access: yes, 2020
To meet the Paris Agreement goal of limiting temperature increase below 2°C, we need to urgently reduce CO2 emissions and reach zero emissions by 2050. According to the International Energy Agency, geologic carbon storage has the potential to contribute ...

Reusing depleted oil and gas wells for geothermal energy: Feasibility, challenges, and a decision‐making framework for sustainable conversion

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The graphical abstract presents a structured decision‐support framework for assessing the feasibility of converting depleted oil and gas wells into geothermal energy systems. The left panel illustrates a comprehensive, multi‐stage decision‐making framework progressing from prefeasibility screening and technical–economic analysis to policy alignment ...

Pore‐Scale Modeling of Carbon Dioxide and Hydrogen Transport During Geologic Gas Storage

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Geologic storage of CO2 and H2 are climate‐positive techniques for meeting the energy transition. While similar formations could be considered for both gases, the flow dynamics could differ due to differences in their thermophysical properties.

Renewable energy mapping in Northeastern Morocco: A geographic information system‐based comparison of geothermal, solar, and wind potential in the Guercif‐Guilliz and Beni Snassen regions

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The graphical abstract summarizes a geographic information system (GIS)‐based synthesis of renewable energy resources in Northeastern Morocco, focusing on the Guercif‐Guilliz and Beni Snassen areas. It visually presents the spatial distribution of solar irradiation and wind energy potential derived from available datasets, alongside their relationship ...

Bio‐based tannin‐loaded layered double hydroxides in epoxy coatings for smart corrosion protection of steel in underground infrastructure

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study presents a sustainable smart‐coating strategy for protecting underground steel infrastructures from chloride‐induced corrosion. Zinc‐aluminum layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and tannin‐loaded LDHs (LDH–TA) were incorporated into an epoxy matrix to provide both enhanced barrier properties and active, pH‐responsive inhibition.

Inducing the international diffusion of carbon capture and storage technologies in the power sector [PDF]

open access: yes
Although CO2 capture and storage(CCS) technologies are heatedly debated, many politicians and energy producers consider them to be a possible technical option to mitigate carbon dioxide from large-point sources.
