Inhibition and geomagnetic field reversals
Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 1993Analysis of the geomagnetic reversal chronology indicates a positive correlation between reversal rate and reversal inhibition. Such a correlation is to be expected between reversal rate and any inhibition resulting from the fact that a reversal transition requires a finite time.

What drives the erratic reversal of Earth's magnetic field? Simulations that allow for variations in heat flow at the core–mantle boundary now implicate events in the mantle. From time to time the Earth's magnetic field reverses in polarity, and the record of such reversals is preserved in rocks magnetized at the time of their formation.

Geomagnetic reversal data statistically appraised
Tectonophysics, 1976Abstract Standard methods of the statistical analysis of time series are applied to available data on geomagnetic reversals. The times between reversals from Kimmeridgian (148 m.y. BP) to Recent display pronounced trend with an increasing rate of occurrence parameter.

The physical basis of geomagnetism and geomagnetic reversals
AIP Conference Proceedings, 1976Geomagnetism is the most familiar example of astrophysical magnetic field production. Our current understanding of the principles of magnetic field generation is briefly reviewed and the major outstanding problems are outlined, with particular emphasis on the Earth.
