Solar antecedents of geomagnetic storms
1997Geomagnetic storms occur when solar wind with unusual characteristics touches the Earth's magnetosphere, but their ultimate origins lie in the structure and dynamics of the solar atmosphere. We observe this atmosphere above the solar limb with coronagraphs, and generally across the whole visible hemisphere at radio and XUV wavelengths.
