Investigation of a Neutral “Tongue” Observed by GOLD During the Geomagnetic Storm on May 11, 2019
Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 2021The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Global‐scale Observations of the Limb and Disk (GOLD) mission observed a unique structure of thermospheric column density ratio of O to N2 (∑O/N2) during a geomagnetic storm on day of year (DOY) 130 (May ...

Extreme Geomagnetic Storms – 1868 – 2010
Solar Physics, 2016We present the first large statistical study of extreme geomagnetic storms based on historical data from the time period 1868 - 2010. This article is the first of two companion papers. Here we describe how the storms were selected and focus on their near-Earth characteristics.

Randomness in Geomagnetic Storms
Fractals, 1997Although geomagnetic forecasting is extremely important, geomagnetic predictions usually rely on forecasters' experience in distinguishing events expected to be geoeffective. Initial investigations with powerful forecasting techniques such as neural networks have recently been applied to geomagnetic prediction, but these are based on the assumption ...

Geomagnetic Index for Intense Ionospheric Storm
2019 Russian Open Conference on Radio Wave Propagation (RWP), 2019© 2019 IEEE. From analysis of the geomagnetic activity indices aa and ap it is obtained that the index aa can be more adequate indicator of geomagnetic activity for the ionospheric parameters at periods of maxima of intense magnetic storms than ap. This is supported by analysis of the F2-layer critical frequency over Irkutsk station at the period of ...

A discussion of the two-gas theory of the transmission of geomagnetic disturbances through the atmosphere (to several earth radii) is extended, with the following results: (i) The central problem concerning the main phase of a geomagnetic storm is the mechanism of penetration of solar ions into the geomagnetic field.

Hydromagnetic theory of geomagnetic storms
Journal of Geophysical Research, 1959A hydromagnetic theory is presented which explains the average characteristics of geomagnetic storms. The magnetic storm is caused by a sudden increase in the intensity of the solar wind. Stresses are then set up in the geomagnetic field by the solar plasma impinging upon the geomagnetic field and becoming trapped in it.

Topside Ionospheric Conditions During the 7–8 September 2017 Geomagnetic Storm
Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 2019The uplooking total electron contents (TECs) from the GRACE, SWARM‐A, TerraSAR‐X, and MetOp‐A satellites and in situ electron density (Ne) from SWARM‐A were utilized to investigate the topside ionospheric conditions during the 7–8 September 2017 ...
