Effects of Geomagnetically Induced Currents-GIC on Electric Power Technology in Brazil
11th International Congress of the Brazilian Geophysical Society & EXPOGEF 2009, Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, 24-28 August 2009, 2009Geoelectric fields induced in the Earth during geomagnetic storms drive electric currents through the windings of power transformers and the transmission lines carrying electric power. These currents, known as GIC (Geomagnetically Induced Currents), flow in the entire electric power systems and cause deleterious effects.

A Case Study on Effect of Geomagnetically Induced Current in Power Transmission
2022 Second International Conference on Advances in Electrical, Computing, Communication and Sustainable Technologies (ICAECT), 2022As a result of space weather events, geomagnetically induced currents (GIC) emerge in the power system. These low-frequency currents in the power supply can be thought of as quasi-DC currents. A half-cycle periodic saturation of the core occurs when a DC

Online Estimation of Geomagnetically Induced Current Effects using Neural Networks
IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting, 2022Geomagnetically-induced currents (GIC) are quasi-DC currents that can flow in the power grid due to space weather. These currents can lead to negative effects such as transformer overheating, excessive harmonics, large reactive power loss, and potential ...

Simulation analysis of geomagnetically-induced currents (GIC) effects on shell-form transformers
2013 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting, 2013Transformer DC excitation due to geomagnetically-induced currents was studied by 3D analysis based on an in-application 280 MVA 500kV/230kV single phase auto transformer design. As a result of previous studies, the transformer design studied here incorporated non-magnetic stainless steel to limit local heating.
