Geomagnetically Induced Currents in the Irish Power Network during Geomagnetic Storms

open access: yes, 2016
Geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) are a well-known terrestrial space weather hazard. They occur in power transmission networks and are known to have adverse effects in both high and mid-latitude countries.

Drastic time variations of transfer function of geomagnetically induced current (GIC) in Japan

open access: yes, 2022
Abstract Geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) flow in power grid in response to geomagnetic field variations. Because of the potential threat of power outage, GIC is regarded as one of the important aspects of space weather. We calculated the transfer function in frequency domain that describes a linear relationship between the GICs measured

UHV AC/DC power grid geomagnetically induced currents harmonic characteristics analysis

open access: yesInternational Journal of Electrical Power & Energy Systems
The power grid’s geomagnetically induced currents (GIC) during geomagnetic storms, are associated with a broad and abrupt harmonic impact, with the potential for grid paralysis and extensive power outages in severe scenarios.

Assessment of the geomagnetically induced currents impact on the power transformers cores of the Altai Republic 110 kV power grid [PDF]

open access: yesE3S Web of Conferences
Based on the Baigazan magnetic station data located in Altai, geomagnetically induced currents (GIC) in primary windings of transformers in the southern part of the Altai Republic power system were calculated during a strong magnetic storm on April 24 ...

Intense Ground Magnetic Perturbations During the 2024 May and October Geomagnetic Storms

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, Volume 131, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract The May and October 2024 geomagnetic storms represent two of the most intense space weather events of Solar Cycle 25. While differing in global intensity, both storms produced extreme ionospheric disturbances, including equatorward auroral expansion to mid‐latitudes and rapid geomagnetic variations (dH/dt $\text{dH}/\text{dt}$).

Toward More Accurate GIC Estimations in the Portuguese Power Network

open access: yesSpace Weather, 2023
New geomagnetically induced current (GIC) computations for mainland Portugal include the entire power network, with network parameters and topology provided by the transmission grid operator for all the high voltage lines (150, 220, and 400 kV).

Reproducibility of the Geomagnetically Induced Currents at Middle Latitudes During Space Weather Disturbances

open access: yesFrontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences, 2021
Watari et al. (Space Weather, 2009, 7) found that the geomagnetically induced current (GIC) in Hokkaido, Japan (35.7° geomagnetic latitude (GML)), is well correlated with the y-component magnetic field (By) (correlation coefficients >0.8) and poorly ...

Relative Contributions of Solar Wind Dynamic Pressure and Interplanetary Electric Field on the Early Positive Part of Main Phase of Geomagnetic Storms

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 24, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract The important early declining part of the main phase (MP) of geomagnetic storms in SYM‐H (and Dst) from positive main phase onset (MPO) to 0‐level of SYM‐H was somehow missed in the treatment of the storms. We included the missed part (or revised the storms) by raising the 0‐level of SYM‐H to MPO‐level, and showed that the inclusion is ...

High Voltage DC Active Current Injection to Simulate Geomagnetically Induced Currents in New Zealand

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 24, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract This study investigates the effects of geomagnetically induced currents (GIC) on New Zealand's electrical infrastructure via an intentional ground injection of direct current (DC) from a high voltage DC converter station. GIC manifests as quasi‐DC currents within power systems, potentially causing transformer saturation, increased reactive ...
