Geomagnetism : review 2010 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The Geomagnetism team measures, records, models and interprets variations in the Earth’s natural magnetic fields, across the world and over time. Our data and expertise help to develop scientific understanding of the evolution of the solid Earth and ...

First Estimations of Geomagnetically Induced Currents in the South of Portugal

open access: yesSpace Weather, 2021
Geomagnetic storms induce electric fields in the conducting Earth, which are the source of geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) in grounded power lines.

System Integration and Field Testing of Low‐Cost Autonomous Platooning Platforms: Collision Avoidance Scenario

open access: yesJournal of Field Robotics, Volume 43, Issue 2, Page 847-878, March 2026.
ABSTRACT This paper presents the development and validation of a scalable platooning system based on the predecessor‐following (PF) topology, designed for low‐cost follower platforms. It integrates key technologies such as localization, path planning, profile generation, and low‐level control to create a practical solution.

Simulation of Geomagnetically Induced Currents in a Low‐Latitude 500 kV Power Network During a Solar Superstorm

open access: yesSpace Weather, 2022
Geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) are one of the main manifestations through which space weather affects human technical facilities, and GICs constitute the final link in the solar wind‐magnetosphere‐ionosphere‐ground interaction chain.

Topology Control Analysis Mitigations for Geomagnetically Induced Currents [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Geomagnetic disturbances (GMD) are caused by corona mass ejections (CMEs) from the sun. These solar CMEs cause changes in the earths magnetic field, which in turn produce non-uniform electric fields.

The Impact of Lunar Phases During Day and Night Cycles on Perinatal Outcomes: A Nationwide Cohort Study

open access: yesBirth, Volume 53, Issue 1, Page 192-200, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Light changes during the lunar cycle affect rhythms in diverse species. Human studies focusing on whether the moon influences human health have so far neglected the effects of light/dark cycles. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether lunar phases impact perinatal outcomes by considering illumination levels due to day ...

Implementing Geomagnetically Induced Currents Mitigation During the May 2024 “Gannon” G5 Storm: Research Informed Response by the New Zealand Power Network

open access: yesSpace Weather
In early May 2024 ∼6 Coronal Mass Ejections were launched toward the Earth in short succession. This triggered the G5 “Gannon” geomagnetic storm lasting from ∼17 UT on 10 May 2024 to ∼9 UT on 12 May 2024.

Frequency Considerations in GIC Applications

open access: yesSpace Weather, 2021
Geomagnetically induced currents (GIC) are a phenomenon well known for its negative effects on the operations of power systems. To efficiently mitigate them requires different types of power system modeling, from GIC to alternating current harmonic ...

How Does the Magnetosphere‐Ionosphere Current System Respond to Solar Flares?

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 4, 28 February 2026.
Abstract While the isolated effects of solar flares on low‐latitude ionospheric electrodynamics have been well documented, the coupled system response of the equatorial electrojet (EEJ), auroral electrojet (AEJ), field‐aligned currents (FACs), and asymmetric ring current (ASY‐H) remains poorly understood.

Statistics of extreme geomagnetically induced current events

open access: yesSpace Weather, 2008
In this work, space weather events associated with extreme geoelectric field and geomagnetically induced current (GIC) magnitudes are investigated. The geoelectric field and consequent GIC are computed using geomagnetic field recordings over an extended time period and ground conductivity and technological system configurations favorable for large GIC.
