The physical basis of geomagnetism and geomagnetic reversals
AIP Conference Proceedings, 1976Geomagnetism is the most familiar example of astrophysical magnetic field production. Our current understanding of the principles of magnetic field generation is briefly reviewed and the major outstanding problems are outlined, with particular emphasis on the Earth.

Geomagnetism deals with all aspects of the Earth's magnetic field, also called the geomagnetic field, that surrounds our habitat in the form of the magnetosphere. We cannot sense the geomagnetic field in any way, and instrumental measurements as continuous recordings or dedicated surveys are necessary to study it.

Exploration Geophysics, 1986Fluctuating electric currents, flowing external to the earth in the ionosphere, the magnetosphere, and beyond, act as primary source fields which cause electromagnetic induction in the solid earth. Secondary electric currents (or 'eddy currents') are thus induced to flow in the earth's oceans, crust, and upper mantle.
