Geomagnetic Survey

2020
Geomagnetic prospecting consists of studying the local deformation of the Earth’s magnetic field produced by differences in the properties of surrounding materials. As fire heats the ground, which transforms the magnetic behaviour of the materials, it leaves an indelible magnetic imprint, the presence of which is revealed by a local deformation of the ...

The origin of geomagnetic jerks

Nature, 2002
Geomagnetic jerks, which in the second half of the twentieth century occurred in 1969 (refs 1, 2), 1978 (refs 3, 4), 1991 (ref. 5) and 1999 (ref. 6), are abrupt changes in the second time-derivative (secular acceleration) of the Earth's magnetic field.

Geomagnetic induction: the study of geomagnetic induction physics

Exploration Geophysics, 1986
Fluctuating electric currents, flowing external to the earth in the ionosphere, the magnetosphere, and beyond, act as primary source fields which cause electromagnetic induction in the solid earth. Secondary electric currents (or 'eddy currents') are thus induced to flow in the earth's oceans, crust, and upper mantle.

EDMOND HALLEY AND GEOMAGNETISM*

Nature, 1943
This annual lecture, commemorating Edmond Halley, a great son of Oxford, is devoted to astronomy and terrestrial magnetism. My subject to‐day is Halley's geomagnetic work considered in its historical setting, but I will preface this by a few remarks on Halley as poet—a seldom remembered aspect of his remarkable versatility.Halley's Latin ...
