Derivation of the geometrical phase
Physical Review A, 1991The geometric (Berry) phase is shown to have its origin in the nontrivial geometry of the fiber bundle: Hilbert space\ensuremath{\rightarrow}space of states. The nontrivial geometry comes simply from the scalar product in Hilbert space. A comprehensive treatment of the geometrical phase is presented, bringing together the various ideas in the ...

The design of a lens that modulates the geometric phase of an optical beam by manipulating its polarization is presented. To produce such a geometric phase element with a spatially varying phase function, one needs a wave plate with varying orientation.

A family of geometric phases associated with the evolution of a quantum system is introduced. These phases share the property of depending on the curve determined by the Schr\"odinger equation as well as on the choice of an orthonormal basis in the Hilbert space of states.

The change in the phase of a beam of light produced by a cyclic change in its state of polarization is an example of the geometric phase that can be verified by interferometric measurements. This paper presents a quantum-field theoretical analysis of the geometric phase interferometer in the limit of a small photon number, as well as some experimental ...

When a quantum system evolves so that it returns to its initial physical state, it acquires a 'memory' of this motion in the form of a geometric phase in the wavefunction. This phase has observable consequences in a wide range of physical systems, and its presence has now been convincingly demonstrated, for example, in optical and nuclear magnetic ...

In 1983 the author found a geometric effect exists in the quantum waves that describe matter and its interactions on the smallest scales. In this case the anholonomy appears in a system's wave function (the mathematical description of a system's physical state) after the system has been transported around a cyclic circuit on an abstract surface in ...

Geometric phases in dissipative systems
Chaos: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Nonlinear Science, 1991It is shown that a phenomenon analogous to the geometric phase shifts of Berry and Hannay occurs for dissipative oscillatory systems and can be detected in numerical simulations of chemical oscillators. The approach herein to the theory of geometric phases begins with a study of simple first-order differential equations on the circle (circle dynamics).

Geometric phases in multiphoton ionization
Physical Review A, 1992We discuss the geometric phase accumulated by the wave function of an atom ionizing in the presence of a bichromatic field as physical parameters are varied adiabatically around a closed circuit. As an illustration we calculate the geometric phase for a hydrogen atom in the presence of 355-nm light and its third harmonic when the phase and intensity of
