Particle interspacing effects on the mechanical behavior of a Fe–TiB2 metal matrix composite using FFT-based mesoscopic field dislocation mechanics

open access: yesAdvanced Modeling and Simulation in Engineering Sciences, 2020
This paper presents an application to metal matrix composites (MMCs) of an enhanced elasto-viscoplastic Fast Fourier Transform (EVP-FFT) formulation coupled with a phenomenological continuum Mesoscale Field Dislocation Mechanics (MFDM) theory.

Continuum dynamics of the formation, migration and dissociation of self-locked dislocation structures on parallel slip planes

open access: yes, 2016
In continuum models of dislocations, proper formulations of short-range elastic interactions of dislocations are crucial for capturing various types of dislocation patterns formed in crystalline materials.

Three-dimensional maps of geometrically necessary dislocation densities in additively manufactured Ni-based superalloy IN718

open access: yesInternational Journal of Plasticity, 2020
Abstract In this work, we present a method to characterize the subgranular three-dimensional distribution of geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) and apply it to an additively manufactured (AM) Ni-based superalloy IN718. A three-dimensional (3D) Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) data set was obtained using TriBeam tomography with ...

Quantum Emitters in Hexagonal Boron Nitride: Principles, Engineering and Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Quantum emitters in hexagonal boron nitride have emerged as a promising candidate for quantum information science. This review examines the fundamentals of these quantum emitters, including their level structures, defect engineering, and their possible chemical structures.

Electroplastic cutting influence on power consumption during drilling process [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The aim of this study is to report the use of non-conventional material removal process technique. It was found that electropulses (EPs) assisted drilling process improves the material machinability based on the eletroplastic influence.

Atomic Size Misfit for Electrocatalytic Small Molecule Activation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This review explores the application and mechanisms of atomic size misfit in catalysis for small molecule activation, focusing on how structural defects and electronic properties can effectively lower the energy barriers of chemical bonds in molecules like H2O, CO2, and N2.

Creep Deformation Estimation of Single Crystal Ni-Based Superalloy by Optimized Geometrically Necessary Dislocation Density Evaluation

open access: yesMetals
In the framework of high temperature components, the need to evaluate the accumulated creep damage during service life is fundamental to extend the life of components which are currently deemed as scrap as per design intent.

Analysis of acoustic emission during the melting of embedded indium particles in an aluminum matrix: a study of plastic strain accommodation during phase transformation

open access: yes, 2012
Acoustic emission is used here to study melting and solidification of embedded indium particles in the size range of 0.2 to 3 um in diameter and to show that dislocation generation occurs in the aluminum matrix to accommodate a 2.5% volume change.

Defect Analysis of the β– to γ–Ga2O3 Phase Transition

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The role of defects at all the relevant stages of the β$\beta$‐ to γ$\gamma$‐Ga2O3 polymorph transition is investigated using a multi method approach. The positron annihilation spectroscopy based results show that the defect density decreases after the transition, and that changes in defect configuration within the γ phase occur with increasing ...
