Local variance for multi-scale analysis in geomorphometry.

open access: yesGeomorphology (Amst), 2011
Increasing availability of high resolution Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) is leading to a paradigm shift regarding scale issues in geomorphometry, prompting new solutions to cope with multi-scale analysis and detection of characteristic scales. We tested the suitability of the local variance (LV) method, originally developed for image analysis, for ...

A hierarchical graph matching method to assess accuracy of network extraction from DTM [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
International audienceMore and more elevation data and methods are available to automatically map hydrographic or thalweg networks. However, there are few methods to assess the network quality.

Wood jam mobility in a morphologically active river in northern Chilean Patagonia

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 50, Issue 3, 15 March 2025.
This study examined post‐eruption wood jam mobility and channel changes in the Blanco River. Floodplain collapses led to large sediment yields. High wood jam mobility rates were reported. Larger, less compact wood jams persist in stable areas; new and missing jams are smaller and linked to deposition and erosion, respectively.

The Effects of Tidal Forcing on Nutrient Fluxes in the Tidal, Freshwater James River Estuary, VA [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
A 12-month study (January to December 2015) focused on the effects of tidal forcing on nutrient fluxes in the tidal, freshwater segment of the James River Estuary (JRE). Discrete sampling of nutrient chemistry and continuous monitoring of tidal discharge

What is the Relationship Between Plant Trait Diversity and Geodiversity? A Plot‐Based, Pan‐European Analysis

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Biogeography, Volume 33, Issue 11, November 2024.
ABSTRACT Aim Heterogeneity of the Earth's abiotic surface and subsurface (geodiversity) is increasingly recognised as an important driver of biodiversity. Theoretically, species' traits should match to abiotic conditions in the local environment. Here, we test this for the first time at a continental extent by analysing the relationships between ...

Unified Geomorphological Analysis Workflows with Benthic Terrain Modeler

open access: yesGeosciences, 2018
High resolution remotely sensed bathymetric data is rapidly increasing in volume, but analyzing this data requires a mastery of a complex toolchain of disparate software, including computing derived measurements of the environment.

Morphology of Barchan Dunes on Earth and Mars: Classification and Scale‐Invariance

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Volume 129, Issue 10, October 2024.
Abstract Morphological characteristics were measured for barchan dunes on Earth (2,686 dunes in 30 barchan fields) and Mars (720 dunes in 10 barchan fields) using satellite images. The data were used to (a) develop a new barchan classification system; (b) compare characteristics of barchans on Earth and Mars; and (c) assess whether barchans, in bulk ...
