A meta‐analytic review of monoterpene for fish anaesthesia

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, Volume 24, Issue 3, Page 367-380, May 2023., 2023
Abstract The use of anaesthetic agents has been increasing to address the welfare needs of different fish species in scientific and aquaculture practices. MS‐222 is the most used synthetic anaesthetic but some limitations and side effects have been reported.

Individual variation in feeding morphology, not diet, can facilitate the success of generalist species in urban ecosystems

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 11, Issue 24, Page 18342-18356, December 2021., 2021
The success generalist species in urban systems is often related to a plastic diet and feeding‐related traits that allow them to take advantage of a variety of food subsidies provided by humans in cities. The classification of a species as generalist is commonly based on mean estimates of diet and feeding traits.

Diversity in visual sensitivity across Neotropical cichlid fishes via differential expression and intraretinal variation of opsin genes

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 30, Issue 8, Page 1880-1891, April 2021., 2021
Abstract The visual system of vertebrates has greatly contributed to our understanding of how different molecular mechanisms shape adaptive phenotypic diversity. Extensive work on African cichlid fishes has shown how variation in opsin gene expression mediates diversification as well as convergent evolution in colour vision.

On some trematodes parasites of fishes from Paraná River [PDF]

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology, 2001
Crassicutis cichlasomae Manter, 1936 is redescribed for the first time in South America and from a new host: Geophagus brasiliensis (Cichlidae). Iheringtrema iheringi Travassos, 1948 is redescribed for the first time since its original description from ...

Ictiofauna do Rio Jurubatuba, Santos, São Paulo: um refúgio de diversidade em terras impactadas [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Ichthyofaunistic surveys in the Atlantic Rainforest have been published in relatively few works, in spite of the major biological importance of this once vast biome which is rapidly vanishing due to disordered human population growth and natural ...

Genetic diversity of Geophagus brasiliensis from the South American Atlantic Rainforest [PDF]

open access: yesForensic Science International: Genetics Supplement Series, 2017
Abstract The Atlantic Rainforest is one of the global conservation hotspots, representing a seriously threatened area with high levels of endemism and species richness. The fishes from the Atlantic Rainforest are one of the most exploited vertebrate groups by the international aquarium commerce, with an annual trade volume of about U$15-25 billions ...

Soluble malate dehydrogenase of Geophagus brasiliensis (Cichlidae, Perciformes): isolated isoforms and kinetics properties

open access: yesGenetics and Molecular Biology, 2008
Kinetic properties and thermal stabilities of Geophagus brasiliensis skeletal muscle unfractionated malate dehydrogenase (MDH, EC 1.1.1.37) and its isolated isoforms were analyzed to examine a possible sMDH-B* locus duplication in a fixation process ...

Mitochondrial DNA phylogeny of the family cichlidae: monophyly and fast molecular evolution of the neotropical assemblage [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
. A mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) phylogeny of cichlid fish is presented for the most taxonomically inclusive data set compiled to date (64 taxa). 16S rDNA data establish with confidence relationships among major lineages of cichlids, with a general pattern ...

Cryptic Chromosomal Diversity in the Complex “Geophagusbrasiliensis (Perciformes, Cichlidae) [PDF]

open access: yesZebrafish, 2016
Among American cichlids, Geophagus stands out as a species-rich genus widespread over neotropical region. Despite their diversity and confusing taxonomy, only few and basic chromosomal reports are available in populations/species along Atlantic coast, hindering our understanding about evolutionary trends in this genus.
