An Approach to Improving the 4DEnVar‐Initialized Deterministic Prediction Skill for Global Weather

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 14, 28 July 2025.
Abstract Global deterministic numerical weather predictions (DNWPs) initialized from the ensemble mean analysis of four‐dimensional ensemble‐variational (4DEnVar) data assimilation are usually worse than those initialized by four‐dimensional variational (4DVar) data assimilation.

Impact of the Western Tibetan Vortex on Springtime Snow Cover Over the Western Tibetan Plateau

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 14, 28 July 2025.
Abstract Snow cover changes are of great importance to the hydrological cycle of the western Tibetan Plateau (TP). However, the influence of the atmospheric circulation on snow cover over the western TP is still unclear. This study finds that springtime snow cover variability over the western TP tail is significantly modulated by the Western Tibetan ...

Impacts of Resolution on Heavy‐Precipitating Storms in Climate Model Hindcasts

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 130, Issue 14, 28 July 2025.
Abstract The present study investigates the impact of horizontal resolutions on heavy‐precipitating storms using the Energy Exascale Earth System Model version2 (E3SMv2) at low (∼100 km, LR) and high (∼25 km, HR) resolutions through short‐range hindcasts.

Revealing Key Dynamical Mechanisms of a Severe Supercell Within a QLCS Using Rapid Update 4DVar Assimilation of C‐Band Phased Array Weather Radar Data

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 130, Issue 14, 28 July 2025.
Abstract We investigate the evolution of a supercell storm within a quasi‐linear convective system (QLCS) that occurred in the Beijing area on 12 June 2022. Using high spatiotemporal resolution observations from a C‐band phased array radar (PAR), assimilated into a four‐dimensional variational data assimilation system, we primarily analyze dynamical ...

A New Pathway of Tropical Cyclone–Trough Interaction as Illustrated by the Over‐Land Re‐Intensification of Oswald (2013)

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 14, 28 July 2025.
Abstract Tropical Cyclone (TC) Oswald (2013) significantly impacted Australia with extensive rainfall and prolonged circulation over land, largely influenced by two mid‐latitude troughs. Unlike other documented studies, Oswald's interaction with the two troughs occurred in the mid‐troposphere, not the upper troposphere.
