Along-Track Geopotential Difference and Deflection of the Vertical from GRACE Range Rate: Use of GEOGRACE

open access: yesTerrestrial, Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, 2016
We present a theory and numerical algorithm to directly determine the time-varying along-track geopotential difference and deflection of the vertical at the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite altitude.

Reanalysis of summer pressure systems affecting Iran\'s atmosphere [PDF]

open access: yesتحقیقات کاربردی علوم جغرافیایی, 2021
This study investigates the subtropical anticyclones and summer monsoons of the north hemisphere in the 500 hPa level, effective on Iran in a 38-year period (1975-2012).

A Cut-off low at 500 hPa Geopotential Height and Rainfall Events over Iraq: Case Studies

open access: yesIraqi Journal of Physics, 2022
A cut-off low is a closed low with a low value of geopotential height at the upper atmospheric levels that has been fully detached (cut-off) from the westerly flow and move independently. A cut-off low causes extreme rainfall events in the mid-latitudes

The Semiannual Oscillation of the Tropical Zonal Wind in the Middle Atmosphere Derived from Satellite Geopotential Height Retrievals

open access: yes, 2017
The dominant mode of seasonal variability in the global tropical upper-stratosphere and mesosphere zonal wind is the semiannual oscillation (SAO). However, it is notoriously difficult to measure winds at these heights from satellite or ground-based ...

The impact of the new Earth gravity models on the measurement of the Lense-Thirring effect with a new satellite

open access: yes, 2005
In this paper we investigate the opportunities offered by the new Earth gravity models from the dedicated CHAMP and, especially, GRACE missions to the project of measuring the general relativistic Lense-Thirring effect with a new Earth's artificial ...

Modelling the influence of soil moisture on the Turkana jet

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
High‐resolution convection‐permitting experiments demonstrate that the Turkana jet is sensitive to soil moisture variations. When examining realistic dry and wet conditions, dry soils amplify a surface‐induced thermal low, which intensifies the along‐channel pressure gradient and strengthens the Turkana jet.

The Accuracy Verification of Recent Global Geopotential Model based on GNSS/Levelling Data on Ground Control Points in Johor [PDF]

open access: yesE3S Web of Conferences
The external gravitational field of the Earth is mathematically represented using spherical harmonic (SH) coefficients in the global geopotential model. Hence, the appropriate global geopotential model for a region needs to determine a reference surface ...

Longitudinal structure of stationary planetary waves in the middle atmosphere – extraordinary years [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2018
One important but little studied factor in the middle atmosphere meridional circulation is its longitudinal structure. Kozubek et al. (2015) disclosed the existence of the two-cell longitudinal structure in meridional wind at 10 hPa at higher ...

A critical approach to the concept of a polar, low-altitude LARES satellite [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
According to very recent developments of the LARES mission, which would be devoted to the measurement of the general relativistic Lense--Thirring effect in the gravitational field of the Earth with Satellite Laser Ranging, it seems that the LARES ...

Regional to large‐scale mechanisms controlling intraseasonal variability of low‐level clouds in Western Equatorial Africa

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
(a) Location map with the 26 stations as yellow squares superimposed on the topography in metres above sea level. Correlations between intraseasonal variability of the stratiform cloud cover over Western Equatorial Africa (WEAisv) and (b) observed low‐cloud fraction (LCF), (c) ERA5 LCF at the same location as stations with the same missing entries, (d)
