Geopotential Height Errors in NWS Rawinsonde Data at Denver
Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, 1988A recent examination of Denver National Weather Service radiosonde data has revealed an error in the procedure used to establish the surface baseline pressure for Denver soundings obtained between 14 April 1983 and 2 March 1988. As a result of this error the baroswitch was improperly set on each sounding, resulting in geopotential heights that average ...

Survey Review, 1963
Abstract Some geodetic methods are geometrical, some are physical, and others have something of both these qualities. In recent years there has been a tendency to mark this distinction more clearly, to the benefit of geodetic science in general.

Bispectral analysis of geopotential‐height anomalies for synoptic‐intraseasonal time‐scales
Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 2001AbstractSpectral decomposition of the third moment of geopotential‐height fluctuations, bispectral analysis, is considered as a convenient and straightforward method of studying the nonlinear three‐wave interactions between spectral constituencies of anomalies.

Solar Physics, 1981
The morphology of a solar activity effect apparently connected with the Sun's rotation and showing up in 25-day and 13.6-day oscillations of stratospheric geopotential and temperature fields is analysed in this study. The used data cover the height range between roughly 20 and 30 km and a timespan from July 1965 to October 1971.

The Evaluation of Winds from Geopotential Height Data in the Stratosphere
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1987Abstract Several methods of obtaining horizontal wind fields in the extratropical stratosphere from geopotential height data are evaluated and compared to geostrophic estimates, with focus on the poleward fluxes of momentum and heat and on the resulting Eliassen–Palm (EP) flux divergence estimates. Winds derived from a coupled iterative solution of the

Asymmetric Geopotential Height Fluctuations from Symmetric Winds
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1996Abstract As a characterization of the variability of observed geopotential height fluctuations, their probability density function (PDF) and its skewness are studied in the global domain for winter and summer. The PDF of the geopotential, Φ, is skewed toward low anomalies at midiatitudes and toward high anomalies in polar and tropical regions.

Climatology of tracked persistent maxima of 500-hPa geopotential height
Climate Dynamics, 2017Persistent open ridges and blocking highs (maxima) of 500-hPa geopotential height (Z500; PMZ) adjacent in space and time are identified and tracked as one event with a Lagrangian objective approach to derive their climatological statistics with some dynamical reasoning.

Potential Predictability of Geopotential Heights over the Southern Hemisphere
Monthly Weather Review, 1985Abstract An analysis of variance approach is used to estimate the potential predictability of interannual fluctuations of the seasonal mean flow over the Southern Hemisphere. The potential predictability of the 1000 and 500 mb geopotential height fields for both summer and winter is assessed.

Secular Variation of Northern Hemisphere 50 kPa Geopotential Height
Journal of Climate, 1988Abstract There is accumulating evidence in the literature that different short-period climate regimes (subclimates) may have characterized the Northern Hemisphere during the past 40 years. We, therefore, investigate the 40-yr record of 50 kPa height (1946–85) and analyze the time series of zonal anomalies stratified by season.

Variation in geopotential height of an isobaric level associated with weather conditions
pure and applied geophysics, 1971Equations $$\frac{{\partial \phi k - 1}}{{\partial t}} = 9.8 T*_{k - 1} \frac{{\phi _k }}{{T_k ^2 }}\frac{{\partial T_k }}{{\partial t}}$$ and $$\frac{{\partial \phi _k }}{{\partial t}} = - 9.8 T*_k \frac{{\phi _k }}{{T_k ^2 }}\frac{{\partial T_k }}{{\partial t}}$$ have been derived.
