Persistence of Daily Geopotential Heights over the Southern Hemisphere
Monthly Weather Review, 1985Abstract An analysis has been made of the persistence of geopotential heights at 1000 and 500 mb over the Southern Hemisphere for both summer and winter seasons. The focus is on lagged autocorrelation T0 the effective time between independent samples and low order autoregressive (AR) models fit to the data. A red noise AR(1) model provides the best fit

Tropical-Extratropical Geopotential Height Teleconnections during the Northern Hemisphere Winter
Monthly Weather Review, 1986Abstract Simultaneous and lagged correlation statistics have been calculated between time series of seasonal height anomalies at selected stations and extratropical grid-point anomalies in both hemispheres. The tropical stations in two major tropical precipitation zones, the Indo-China maritime continent and Africa, are well correlated with each other.

Teleconnections in the Geopotential Height Field during the Northern Hemisphere Winter
Monthly Weather Review, 1981Abstract Contemporaneous correlations between geopotential heights on a given pressure surface at widely separated points on earth, referred to as teleconnections in this paper, are studied in an attempt to identify and document recurrent spatial patterns which might be indicative of standing oscillations in the planetary waves during the Northern ...

Recent variations in geopotential height associated with West African monsoon variability
Meteorology and Atmospheric Physics, 2018In the present study, the atmospheric circulation patterns associated with the seasonal West Africa (WA) monsoon (WAM) rainfall variability has been investigated. The observational rainfall data from the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) and atmospheric fields from the National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) reanalysis 2, from 1979 to 2014, have

Optimal determination of geopotential base height for stratospheric temperature sounders
pure and applied geophysics, 1980A technique is developed for optimally determining a base geopotential field, on which stratospheric heights may be constructed from remotely sensed temperatures. The scheme employs height information from within as well as below remote observational levels.

Space-Time Spectral Analyses of Northern Hemisphere Geopotential Heights
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1983Abstract A space-time spectral analysis of a long time series of observed geopotential heights for each season at several levels and latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere was performed as part of a continuing investigation of large-scale traveling waves. The data set that is analyzed consists of the first six zonal wavenumbers.

Application of geopotential numbers to determine the heights of GNSS network reference stations
International Conference of Young Professionals «GeoTerrace-2020», 2020Summary The aim of the work is to study the possibility of using geopotential numbers to determine the heights of the reference states of the GNSS network. According to the results of regular GNSS observations at reference stations, their spatial coordinates X, Y, Z or B L, H for a certain epoch are determined.

World Height System Specified by Geopotential at Tide Gauge Stations
2002World Height System (WHS) can be directly specified and practically realized within a Terrestrial Reference System (TRS) by choosing a geoidal geopotential W 0. There are two possible ways how to select the W 0of the WHS datum: (1) By adopting W 0 as the reference geopotential value, to which all the Local Vertical Datums (LVDs) should be ...

Skewness, Kurtosis and Extreme Values of Northern Hemisphere Geopotential Heights
Monthly Weather Review, 1980Abstract Twelve summers and 11 winters of Northern Hemisphere 500 and 1000 mb geopotential height are used to calculate the third and fourth moments of height in the nondimensional form of skewness and kurtosis. Geopotential height exhibits small but statistically significant departures from a normal distribution in places, especially in low latitudes.

Structure and Simulation of the Random Analysis Error of 500 mb Geopotential Heights
Monthly Weather Review, 1984Abstract The structure of the analysis error field of the 500 mb height north of 20°N was estimated from the differences between analyses issued by two different centers. The resulting variance field is very similar to that computed with the aid of the optimum interpolation.
