Fluctuations of High Clouds and 500-mb Geopotential Heights in Baroclinic Waveguides

Monthly Weather Review, 1991
The spatial phase relationship between the atmospheric circulation and the bandpass fluctuations in cloudiness are investigated using satellite retrievals of high cloud areas reported by Stowe et al. (1988, 1989) NMC 500-mb geopotential heights in northern extratropics.

CORRELATIONS BETWEEN AREAL PRECIPITATION AND 850-MILLIBAR GEOPOTENTIAL HEIGHT

Monthly Weather Review, 1971
Abstract Geopotential heights of the 850-mb surface at 499 grid points over one-half of the Northern Hemisphere, extending from 10°E westward to 170°W, were correlated with daily precipitation observations over California and an area in the Eastern United States on 401 January and February days. Correlations as high as 0.69 were obtained between 850-mb

Geopotential Heights and Thicknesses as Predictors of Atlantic Tropical Cyclone Motion and Intensity

Monthly Weather Review, 1985
Abstract In response to the increasing availability of satellite and aircraft temperature observations on the periphery of tropical cyclones, archived thickness and geopotential height data from National Meteorological Center analyses am compared as Atlantic cyclone predictors. For maximum use in motion prediction, thickness must be converted into deep-

A Climatological Spectral Study of the 500 mb Geopotential Height of the Northern Hemisphere

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1976
Abstract A 10-year record of the 500 mb geopotential height for the Northern Hemisphere has been expanded into spherical harmonics and filtered in the time domain. Maps of the root-mean-square (rms) height have been constructed corresponding to different spatial scales and frequency bands. The spatial scales and frequency bands were chosen to emphasize

Which type of WNPSH indices can be better applied, defined by the geopotential height, the eddy geopotential height, or the stream function?

The western North Pacific subtropical high (WNPSH) is a crucial circulation system affecting weather and climate over China. To quantitatively measure its strength and spatial pattern, the geopotential height was firstly used to define WNSPH indices (H indices). However, due to global warming, the H indices have&#
