A Synoptic Analysis of Cyclonic Activity During 1961-2003 [PDF]
Mid-latitude cyclones play an important role in precipitation over Iran. A survey on 6-hourly geopotential height of 1000 hPa level showed that the number of cyclones in the studied area reveals a positive trend.

On the comparison between two sets of 500 mb geopotential height eigenfunctions [PDF]
When the largest eigenvalues of an Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis are of similar magnitude, the corresponding EOFs do not hold great interest when they are considered one at a time; only the vector subspace generated by the first EOFs is significant.

PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF GEOPOTENTIAL MODELS IN ESTIMATING THE GEOIDAL HEIGHT OVER IRAN
Abstract. Global geopotential models (GGMs) are widely used in earth sciences, especially in geodesy and geophysics. In this paper, we aim at studying GGMs' capability in the geoidal height estimation at the geographical region of Iran. This will include verification of both satellite-only and combined GGMs.

Unbiased calculation, evaluation, and calibration of ensemble forecast anomalies
Standard methods for calculating ensemble forecast anomalies result in statistical inconsistencies between forecast and verification anomalies, even if the underlying forecasts are perfectly reliable. An unbiased evaluation of anomaly‐based ensemble forecasts must account for differences in climatological sampling uncertainty between forecasts and ...

Satellite techniques for determining the geopotential for sea-surface elevations [PDF]
Spaceborne altimetry with measurement accuracies of a few centimeters which has the potential to determine sea surface elevations necessary to compute accurate three-dimensonal geostrophic currents from traditional hydrographic observation is discussed ...

Summer precipitation in East Asia has significant quasi-biweekly (10–30-day) oscillation characteristics. By using gauge-based precipitation and ERA-Interim reanalysis data, the basic mode of the quasi-biweekly oscillation of summer precipitation in East

An original method is applied to identify distinct periods of observed NAO spatial patterns, evaluating the ability of state‐of‐the‐art climate models to reproduce them. Their poor representation of this multidecadal variability increases uncertainty in winter precipitation projections for Europe and likely broad regions of the Northern Hemisphere ...

How tropical Pacific surface cooling contributed to accelerated sea ice melt from 2007 to 2012 as ice is thinned by anthropogenic forcing [PDF]
Over the past 40 years the Arctic sea ice minimum in September has declined. The period between 2007 and 2012 showed accelerated melt contributed to the record minima of 2007 and 2012.

Impacts of the Madden-Julian oscillation on Australian rainfall and circulation [PDF]
Impacts of the Madden¿Julian oscillation (MJO) on Australian rainfall and circulation are examined during all four seasons. The authors examine circulation anomalies and a number of different rainfall metrics, each composited contemporaneously for eight ...
