A machine vision meta-algorithm for automated recognition of underwater objects using sidescan sonar imagery [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
This paper details a new method to recognize and detect underwater objects in real-time sidescan sonar data imagery streams, with case-studies of applications for underwater archeology, and ghost fishing gear retrieval. We first synthesize images from sidescan data, apply geometric and radiometric corrections, then use 2D feature detection algorithms ...

Mobilisation of Data From Natural History Collections Can Increase the Quality and Coverage of Biodiversity Information

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 4, April 2025.
Data gaps on the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) are well described for the tropics and invertebrates, and here, we show that biases in spatial coverage translate to undersampling of environmental conditions and rare climates. However, our results underline that further mobilisation of natural history collections has the capacity to ...

FlexCloud: Direct, Modular Georeferencing and Drift-Correction of Point Cloud Maps [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Current software stacks for real-world applications of autonomous driving leverage map information to ensure reliable localization, path planning, and motion prediction. An important field of research is the generation of point cloud maps, referring to the topic of simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). As most recent developments do not include

Effects of Climate Change Scenarios on Population and Distribution Pattern of Tree–Ferns in Nepal

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 4, April 2025.
Tree‐ferns are distributed only in central and eastern Nepal with maximum density in Kaski and Lamjung districts, Central Nepal. This reveals that the central mid‐hills of Koshi and Gandaki provinces, particularly with the moist habitats and maximum rainfall areas, are suitable for tree‐ferns. The projected distribution is influenced mostly by the mean

Vegetation and channel adjustment trajectories in cold regions: The effects of ice disturbances in two Gaspesian rivers

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 50, Issue 5, April 2025.
This study explores the role of ice jam regimes on the biogeomorphological dynamics of two cold‐climate rivers. The analysis of vegetation and channel planform adjustments on a 60‐year timescale showed that the ice jam regime had notable impacts on vegetation successional dynamics, which further modulate geomorphological changes.
