Nested ocean models: Work in progress [PDF]

open access: yes
The ongoing work of combining three existing software programs into a nested grid oceanography model is detailed. The HYPER domain decomposition program, the SPEM ocean modeling program, and a quasi-geostrophic model written in England are being combined

SWOT Geostrophic Velocity Validation Against In Situ Measurements in the California Current

open access: yesEarth and Space Science
The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission provides high‐resolution sea surface height (SSH) observations from the Ka‐band Radar Interferometer (KaRIn), with the potential to improve our understanding of ocean circulation dynamics.

Evaluating the Signal Contribution of the DTU21MSS on Coastal Mean Dynamic Topography and Geostrophic Current Modeling: A Case Study in the African–European Region

open access: yesRemote Sensing
With the accumulation of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) altimetry data and advancements in retracking algorithms, the improved along-track spatial resolution and signal-to-noise ratio have significantly enhanced the availability and precision of sea ...

On the near surface momentum balance in the Yucatán Channel [PDF]

open access: yesGeofísica Internacional, 2008
The horizontal momentum balance in the upper layers of the Yucatán Channel is examined for a period of 22 months, from September 1999 to June 2001, using subsurface currents from ADCP measurements at eight moorings across the channel, pressure ...

Attempts to Determine the Velocity Variations in Ocean Geostrothrophic Currents Based on GRACE Solutions

open access: yesRemote Sensing
The paper shows the idea of using GRACE solutions to determine the velocity of the Atlantic geostrophic currents at a depth of 2000 m, where the assumptions of geostrophic motion are met. The relationship between the water velocity variations and the OBP,

Climatology of geostrophic currents in the Northern Adriatic

open access: yesGeofizika, 2003

open access: yesGeofizika, 1986
The first results of the objective analysis of geostrophic currents in the Adriatic Sea are presented. Data collected during the “Andrija Mohorovičić” cruise in September and October 1974 are used for computing relative dynamic depths. These are then interpolated on a rectangular grid points, using a first-order polynomial for approximating the mean ...

Intensification of Geostrophic Currents in the Canada Basin, Arctic Ocean

open access: yesJournal of Climate, 2013
Abstract Continuous sampling of upper-ocean hydrographic data in the Canada Basin from various sources spanning from 2003 through 2011 provides an unprecedented opportunity to observe changes occurring in a major feature of the Arctic Ocean. In a 112-km-radius circle situated near the center of the traditional Beaufort Gyre, geopotential

Forty years of geostrophic currents in the Ligurian Sea

open access: yes, 2015
An analysis is made of the historical datasets covering almost 40 years (1976 - 2014) in the Ligurian Sea, in the North-Western Mediterranean. Two transects are studied: one at the boundary with the Tyrrhenian sea, in the Corsica Channel, the other between Nice on the French coast and Calvì on Corsica.
