Precession Effects on Liquid Planetary Core

open access: yes, 2017
Motivated by the desire to understand the rich dynamics of precessionally driven flow in the liquid planetary core, we investigate, through numerical simulations, the precessing fluid motion in a rotating cylindrical annulus which possesses slow ...

Terrestrial Analogs to Titan for Geophysical Research

open access: yesReviews of Geophysics, Volume 64, Issue 2, June 2026.
Abstract Saturn's moon Titan exhibits remarkable parallels to the Earth in many geophysical and geological processes not found elsewhere in the solar system at the present day. These include a nitrogen atmosphere with a condensible gas—methane—replacing the Earth's water, leading to an active meteorology with rainfall and surface manifestations ...

Balanced to Unbalanced Motions at a Submesoscale Front and Energy Transfer From Eddy Splitting

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract Submesoscale dynamics play a crucial role in energy redistribution in the upper ocean but remain challenging to observe due to their small spatial and temporal scales. We use ship‐based observations of an oceanic submesoscale front sampled at high resolution while repeatedly traversed to observe deformation and splitting of an embedded ...

Mapping Kinetic Energy Hotspots in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea Using Surface Current Derived by Geodetic Observations and Data Assimilation

open access: yesRemote Sensing
Harnessing ocean kinetic energy has emerged as a promising renewable energy solution in recent years. However, identifying optimal locations for extracting this energy remains a significant challenge.

Aspects of the circulation in the Rockall Trough [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
An investigation is made of the circulation and structure of the water masses in the Rockall Trough in spring, combining the results of a recent synoptic survey (May 1998) with those from a high-resolution ocean circulation model.

A Submesoscale Cascade‐Driven Mesoscale Seasonal Cycle in the Subtropics

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract We show that the submesoscale inverse cascade almost entirely drives the mesoscale kinetic energy (KE) seasonal cycle in the interior subtropical gyre. Using a coarse‐graining framework to diagnose cross‐scale energy fluxes (Πh ${{\Pi }}_{h}$), we show the forward cascade remains confined to <20 km within the mixed layer, peaking January–March.

Low frequency shelf current fluctuations in the Gulf of Alaska [PDF]

open access: yes, 1977
Thesis (M.S.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 1977A general oceanographic study of a shelf region in the Gulf of Alaska has revealed low-frequency, current fluctuations.

Role of North Pacific Sea Surface Temperatures in Linking Summer Beaufort Sea Ice to Preceding‐Winter ENSO

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract Interannual variability of the Beaufort Sea (BFS) ice notably affects the oceanic circulation, pelagic and sympagic ecosystems, and navigation activities. However, key physical pathways regulating interseasonal connections between the El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and BFS ice concentration anomalies in early‐summer (May–July) remain ...

The sensitivity of rapidly rotating Rayleigh--B\'enard convection to Ekman pumping

open access: yes, 2017
The dependence of the heat transfer, as measured by the nondimensional Nusselt number $Nu$, on Ekman pumping for rapidly rotating Rayleigh-B\'enard convection in an infinite plane layer is examined for fluids with Prandtl number $Pr = 1$.

Seafloor Sediments, Morphologic Features, and Geotechnical Properties of Harrison Bay in the Alaskan Beaufort Sea

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 13, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Sediments on Arctic continental shelves are impacted by sea ice and ice‐related processes for up to 9 months per year. As a result, seabed morphology in cold regions can exhibit features such as ice scours which are absent on lower‐latitude shelves.
