A comparison between geostrophic and current meter observations in a California current eddy
Deep Sea Research Part A. Oceanographic Research Papers, 1982Abstract An eddy was observed about 200 km west of the central California coast using geostrophic estimates and a combined Eulerian-Lagrangian method. The eddy was about 80 km in diameter, with a depth-dependent rotational period of between 15 and 32 days. Spin rates were 6 to 20 cm−1 at 150 m and 1 to 8 cm s−1 at 1500 m.

Geostrophic Current and Associated Vertical Motion off Northeastern Taiwan
1991Abstract The geostrophic velocity changes its direction with increasing depth by thermal wind relationship. The rate of rotation with depth is related to the vertical velocity by Hide's theorem. A method for calculating the three-dimensional absolute velocity by means of Hide's theorem and beta vorticity dynamics is developed.

On the Mixed Stability Program for Quasi-Geostrophic Ocean Currents
Journal of Physical Oceanography, 1974Abstract A simple, two-layer, quasi-geostrophic model is used to investigate the stability of baroclinic currents confined to a finite length scale L in a basin of considerably larger dimension (4L). The current distributions studied are typical of oceanic boundary currents and of certain oceanic and atmospheric eddies.

Eddy-Current Interactions using a Two-Layer Quasi-Geostrophic Model
1989Abstract Processes associated with interactions between a mesoscale eddy and an ocean current are examined using a two-layer quasi-geostrophic model. Model configuration is chosen so that the eddy tends to approach the current, and the chance for interactions is enhanced.

The quasi‐geostrophic advective wave in a baroclinic zonal current
Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 1951AbstractAn idealised advective wave is studied on the assumption of geostrophic advection of temperature. There is a genuine instability of zonal motion due to this factor and the wave form is similar to thermally asymmetrical depressions and anticyclones.
