Frontal‐Driven Water‐Mass Transformation in a Western Boundary Current: Evidence From the Yucatan Current

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 5, 16 March 2026.
Abstract We report the recurrent formation of waters with thermohaline properties similar to Gulf Common Water (GCW) in the western Yucatan Channel, absent upstream in the Caribbean. Mooring observations and a partial submesoscale‐resolving model show that these Yucatan GCW forms locally when the Yucatan Current separates from the slope, intensifying a

Finer Vertical Resolution Improves the Sudden Stratospheric Warming Prediction Through Better Representing Planetary Waves

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 5, 16 March 2026.
Abstract Sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) strongly impact tropospheric weather, yet their accurate prediction remains a significant challenge. This study investigates the predictability of SSWs in the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model with different vertical resolutions.

World Ocean Isopycnal Level Absolute Geostrophic Velocity (WOIL-V) Inverted from GDEM with the P-Vector Method

open access: yesData, 2018
Three-dimensional dataset of world ocean climatological annual and monthly mean absolute geostrophic velocity in isopycnal level (called WOIL-V) has been produced from the United States (U.S.) Navy’s Generalized Digital Environmental Model (GDEM ...

Rainfall and Rain‐on‐Snow Events Over Greenland in Summer: Climatology, Trends, Synoptics

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 5, 16 March 2026.
Abstract Rain‐on‐snow (ROS) events in the Arctic can lead to major impacts on the snow cover, cryosphere and environment. During the last decades, these events have significantly increased, mostly due to climate change. Here, we use outputs from the regional climate model MAR (version 3.14) driven by the ERA5 reanalysis at 10‐km resolution over ...

Seasonal and interannual variabilities of mean velocity of Kuroshio based on satellite data

open access: yesWater Science and Engineering, 2012
Combining sea level anomalies with the mean dynamic topography derived from the geoid of the EGM08 global gravity field model and the CLS01 mean sea surface height, this study examined the characteristics of global geostrophic surface currents and the ...

Seismic Stratigraphy of Eocene–Recent Mixed Depositional Systems on the SE New Zealand Continental Margin, Great South Basin

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics, Volume 69, Issue 1, March 2026.
The continental margin of SE New Zealand is strongly influenced by the Southland Current and associated water masses. This new seismic stratigraphic study of the margin has revealed a range of depositional mounds and erosional channels that document the close interaction of turbidity and bottom currents in shaping the margin from the Mid‐Eocene onward.

River discharge impacts coastal southeastern tropical Atlantic sea surface temperature and circulation: a model-based analysis [PDF]

open access: yesOcean Science
The southeastern tropical Atlantic (SETA) coastal region sustains highly productive fisheries and marine ecosystems, thus having immeasurable socio-economic importance for southwestern African coastal countries.

Detecting surface geostrophic currents using wavelet filter from satellite geodesy

open access: yesScience in China Series D: Earth Sciences, 2007
According to the features of spatial spectrum of the dynamic ocean topography (DOT), wavelet filter is proposed to reduce short-wavelength and noise signals in DOT. The surface geostrophic currents calculated from the DOT models filtered by wavelet filter in global and Kuroshio regions show more detailed information than those from the DOT models ...

Intermediate Western Boundary Current speeds from the southeastern Brazilian margin: A 16,000‐year record from grain‐size evidence

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters, Volume 11, Issue 2, March 2026.
Abstract This study presents a high‐resolution reconstruction of the Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) transport variability on the southeastern Brazilian continental margin over the last 16,000 years BP, based on grain‐size analysis. Variations of sortable silt (SS¯$$ \overline{SS} $$) are interpreted as changes in flow speed of the Intermediate ...

Use of recent geoid models to estimate mean dynamic topography and geostrophic currents in South Atlantic and Brazil Malvinas confluence

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Oceanography, 2012
The use of geoid models to estimate the Mean Dynamic Topography was stimulated with the launching of the GRACE satellite system, since its models present unprecedented precision and space-time resolution. In the present study, besides the DNSC08 mean sea
